CHARACTER CHALLENGE
Once in a while, we could all use a little push. When we've been rooted in our routines, when we've been stuck in negative thought patterns, or when new opportunities come our way — we need positive friends to help us move forward. Their confidence in us provides us with the courage and momentum we need to make a change. Think of a friend of yours who is in need of a push. How can you help to motivate them? If you need to make a change, how can your friends keep you accountable?

TESTING NEWS
Loudoun County Public Schools’ 2018 graduates who completed the SAT outperformed the state and national averages based on data released by the College Board.
The average total score for the LCPS class of 2018 was 1184, 29 points higher than the class of 2017 average total score of 1155. LCPS graduates scored 67 points higher than students from all school types (public, private, parochial, and home school) in Virginia. The LCPS average exceeded the national average total score for all school types by 116 points. The maximum score is 1600.
These results reflect scores earned on the new SAT exam, which was implemented in March 2016. The SAT now consists of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math, with an optional essay.
Average scores for every student subgroup within LCPS increased for both parts of the exam, except for the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing scores of Black students, which decreased by 1 point from 540 to 539.

STRESS IN AMERICA™ GENERATION Z
The American Psychological Association (APA) conducted its 12th annual Stress in AmericaTM survey in August 2018 to understand what causes stress in Americans’ lives and their strategies for coping with stress. The Harris Poll conducted the survey online on behalf of APA among 3,458 respondents ages 18+ living in the United States. In addition to the main sample, interviews among teens ages 15 to 17 (n=300) were collected.
YOGA at John Champe
In August 2018, the Office of School Counseling conducted a needs assessment with students and parents. 68.2% of students identified stress as their number one cause of concern and 44.4% of parents identified stress as the number one area of concern for their child. To address this concern, the JCHS PTSA has agreed to sponsor YOGA for Champe students taught by Treehouse Fit Yoga (www.treehousefitva.com)
Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system. Yoga also improves the mood, behavior, and mindfulness of high school students. In 2012, the Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research reported that students taking yoga reported positive mood and attitude changes, increased energy and improved ability to relax, as well as improved posture.
Classes for 2nd quarter will be on Wednesday's at 8:15am in the Aux gym starting on November 28. The classes are FREE for students and $5 for faculty. You must register to attend. Anyone who registers and does not show will be assessed a $5 NO SHOW fee.
BRING a yoga mat (if you have one, if not one will be provided), bottle of water, and a towel.
