Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
This week I was stopped in the hallway by one of our regular substitutes. She seemed emotional, so I braced myself a bit as she began. She stated, “I want to share something with you. I work in many schools all across the district, but there is no place like this school. Every time I work here, I feel like a celebrity. The students here smile and wave and greet me so kindly. They go out of their way to be caring even when it is not required.” I wish I could have recorded her expressions as she shared specifics about our students and their thoughtfulness. I was so moved by her sentiment because as a visitor she described what I experience every day. I have never been more proud of our students! Thank you for fostering love in your homes and sharing your students with us each day. Enjoy the weekend!
In collaboration,
Rebecca Williams Perkins
Principal, Webb Bridge Middle School

REDUCE TESTING ANXIETY
The brain reacts to all anxiety-causing stimuli the same way. Whether you’re anxious about an oncoming train, or the difficulty in choosing between answer b and answer c, your anxiety—even just a little anxiety—is going to make thinking more difficult.
- One of the most efficient and effective methods for stimulating mental processes and performance is controlled breathing. Research shows that students can improve their performance if they do breathing exercises prior to tests or assignments; these exercises also reduce test anxiety. Controlled breathing increases oxygen flow to the brain, which in turn boosts memory, concentration and problem-solving abilities.
- Teach students to count to five when breathing in, and then exhale for a count of five (all through the nose, which adds a natural resistance to the breath).

This timely message was well received as our chapter is preparing to accept applications for the 2018-2019 FBLA leadership team!
