BIS Newsletter Week 5 Term 2

Friday 4th June 2021

Talofa lava. We've had a great Samoan Langage week. Weeks like this always remind us of what a wonderfully diverse community we live in and we thank everyone in the Samoan community who has shared their culture with us this week.

This week we welcomed Mrs. Lana Lui to our maths team and as the Whānau teacher of Whānau 18. She will be a fantastic asset as she brings a wealth of teaching experience and has recently moved into our community. She will be taking over the maths commitments of Matua Steve who will continue to be the Whānau teacher of Whānau 23 who has moved into Health and PE with Whaea Rachel.

Mr Seedhouse has had some health issues and has decided to take leave for the remainder of 2021 to focus on his wellbeing and his whānau. We wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him back in 2022.

Year 8 visit to Birkenhead College

Next Friday the 11th of June our Year 8's have been invited to Birkhead College to have a look around and see what happens at College. The staff and ex-Birkdale Intermediate students have an exciting programme in place which will give our Year 8's a chance to talk to them and ask questions about what it is like to attend college as a Year 9 student. They will participate in activities across Science, Art, Music and Food Technology just to name a few. We look forward to going and seeing how our ex-pupils have transitioned into Year 9 and 10.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

On the 2nd of July, your child will be bringing home their mid-year report. This report will give you an overview of how your child is progressing so far this year in all curriculum areas.

We will be holding our Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday the 8th of July. More information on how to book these conferences will be sent home in the next few weeks. Please note that School will finish at 1.15 pm on this day and Conferences will be held between 2 pm-8 pm.

On Wednesday 30th June, 66 of our Students will be performing at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre at ShowQuest. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at

Our School Buses

A few reminders about using our school buses. Students must have a registered AT HOP card to ride our school buses. We have noticed a number of students who are arriving at the school bus without money on their AT HOP card to purchase their fare home. This seems to be a regular occurrence. Please remind your children to let you know if they need to top up their card.

As we approach the colder (and wetter) weather, we have more students using our buses. Can you please remind your children that our school rules apply when travelling to and from school on our buses. They are expected to show care to the other people on the bus and they must remain seated for their journey.

You can find more information on our bus routes on our BIS Website

World Vision Youth Conference

During the World Vision Youth conference, four Birkdale Intermediate students were invited to join with other students from all over New Zealand to learn more about the challenges our world is facing. We got to 'go fishing' to help us "think outside our pool" and took a leadership quiz. We learned about inequality, modern-day slavery and some amazing projects around New Zealand and the world that support those in need. We had an amazing day and learned a lot from the World Vision conference leaders!

Volunteer Band Tutor Wanted

We have a fabulous band who is in need of a Band Tutor! If you have some time to spare and would love to mentor and tutor a band of Year 8 students, please contact for more information.

Year 8 Camp

Have you set up automatic payments for the year 8 camp? We want all students to be able to attend and we know that cost can be a barrier. If you set up an automatic payment this week then you will be able to pay it off before term 4 for just $15 per week.

Camp is an amazing experience for our students and gives them the chance to participate in a range of outdoor activities that are challenging. Students learn valuable life skills through managed risk taking while having lots of fun at the same time.

Please set up your automatic payment using your child's name as the reference and the words Y8Camp.
