JANUARY HUSKIE HOWL
NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome Back SBE!
We are so glad to be back at school! We hope you all enjoyed your break, we sure did. The first semester was incredible and we are looking forward to the rest of the school year.
The next few days we will be resetting our school and classroom expectations. We find this to be extremely important and effective after a long break. As part of our Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) efforts, we wanted to share that we updated a few of our schoolwide rules.
The first update pertains to our bathrooms, we are now asking students to wait to use the bathroom right outside the bathroom instead of inside the bathroom. We are also limiting the number of students in the bathroom at the same time. We believe these two additions will help with traffic flow and not crowd the bathrooms.
The next update is to our Walk, Talk or Rock system. If a student has a “kid-size” problem with another student, they either “Walk” (walk away from the situation), “Talk” (talk through the problem), or “Rock” (do rock, paper, scissors). “Kid-size” problems are situations in which they can resolve by talking, helping or listening to each other. For example, someone is not sharing materials or someone can’t find their math book. Students are also taught to tell an adult for all “adult-size” problems. We believe it is important to teach students these invaluable life skills.
Lastly, we are working on helping older students understand how rough play or horseplay can lead to unintentional harm. If students engage in this play, they will be asked to stop immediately. If they refuse or re-engage, they will receive a consequence that may include one or more of the following: loss of recess, community service, reading and writing about why rules are important and/or speaking to our nurse about injuries that could result from horseplay. For our younger students, we will ask them to stop and use the opportunity to teach them why horse play can be harmful.
The weather is still unpredictable in January, so please have your students dress accordingly. As always thank you for your amazing support!

Chocolate Fundraiser coming soon!!
We are kicking off our Chocolate Fundraiser with World's Finest Chocolate on January 17-27. We would like to use the fundraising efforts to pave our walking path. The walking path was developed back in early 2000's and is used quite frequently by students at recess/PE class when conditions are right and also for our Huskie Hustle event held every October. The path helps to promote health and wellness efforts for our students and patrons of the community. We are excited to start our largest fundraiser to enhance a central part of our school. Thank you for your support.
SPELLING BEE INFORMATION
Dear Parents,
We are excited to announce that Shadow Butte will be competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We will be sending our top speller to the regional competition in March.
On the back of this letter, you will find a list of words for your child. Please help them study these words. At the bottom of this letter, I have included links to the same list with definitions and pronunciation guides. You should receive a digital copy of this letter to follow those hyperlinks. For the classroom round, classes will start with the grade level words. If a classroom has more than 6 students remaining and have used all grade-level words, they will move onto the other two sets of grade-level words, so students who master the grade level list should study the other two lists. All grade level lists are linked below and you may request hard copies if you like.
Classroom competitions will be held during the week of January 17-20th with students and teachers in their homerooms. Each class will choose six representatives to compete in a grade-level competition based on the classroom spelling competitions that week.
Those six winners from each class will go on to compete in the semi-finals for each grade level. Students will be given additional words to study at that point and parents of those competing will be invited to attend.
The top two spellers from each grade level at the semi-finals will go on to compete in the school final which will be held on February 16th. More details will follow for those students who win their class competition and the grade level competition.
Please help your child study so that they can do their best.
Thank you,
Brandi Griggs-Organizer

Estimados padres,
Gracias,
Brandi Griggs-Organizadora

Morning Drop-Offs
Shadow Butte Elementary School wants our students to be safe at school. To ensure safety, adult supervision is provided from 8:35 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the playground, bus area and inside the school. The students are the parents’ responsibility at all other times. If you are dropping off your child before this unsupervised time, please know that we do not have staff available to watch your child. If you can make arrangements to drop off children after 8:35, that would be greatly appreciated.
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
- If there are changes on how your children will be going home at the end of the day, those changes must be called into the office at 208-365-0877 by 3:15 pm and on Wednesdays by 1:45 pm. Please plan ahead because it disrupts the process of release time when we pull students from the bus line if they are already there.

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is coming to Shadow Butte Elementary this spring! Girls on the Run programs empower, increase self-worth, and spark joy in youth. Can you help our school by volunteering once or twice a week? Volunteers are trained by GOTR staff, do not need to be runners, and can be of any gender.
The spring season starts the week of March 6th. Team registration opens on January 30th - use this link to sign up your GOTR participant - https://www.pinwheel.us/register/index/GOTRspring23.
Check back often to view added sites from GOTR's "coming soon" list!
There is a cost involved, but it is on a sliding scale and can be worked out if cost is a struggle. Please do not let that keep your daughter from participating in this fun program!
