Students are Encouraged to Engage as Citizens and Pre-Register to Vote

Per the California Education Code, the last two weeks of September are designated as High School Voter Education Weeks, a time for teens to learn about and prepare to engage in the democratic process.

Schools are encouraged to partner with local county elections officials “to promote civic education and participation on campus and foster an environment that cultivates lifelong voters and active citizens,” according to the Secretary of State’s website. As high schoolers return from summer break and refocus on academics and planning for life post-graduation, the department has a back-to-school pre-registration toolkit available to encourage eligible 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register online to vote, with their registration becoming active upon turning 18, and middle and high schools can also begin preparing to participate in the 2024 California Student Mock Election, scheduled to take place on Oct. 8, 2024.

Our Time is Now: California Voter Pre-Registration

Academy of the Canyons

Located on the campus of College of the Canyons, AOC is proud to be the middle college high school in the William S. Hart Union High School District serving students 9th-12th grades in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students have the opportunity to earn between 24 and 44 transferable college units, prior to receiving their high school diplomas. Upon graduation, the majority of Academy students pursue their post high school education by continuing at COC and completing their college transfer requirements in only one year after high school. Other AOC students go directly into a four-year university, bringing their community college units with them and placing themselves well into their freshman and sophomore years at the college level. While attending AOC as a high school student, community college tuition is waived for established California residents.
