5th Edition: Panhellenic Preview Day
Welcome to the ~PPD Edition~ of the PNM Newsletter! This is the last issue before PPD on November 15th.
The most important things for you this week are:
- Tell your friends to sign up for recruitment! The absolute deadline is November 6th by 5pm (NOT BY MIDNIGHT). If you do not submit your registration by 4:59pm on the 6th, you will not be participating in recruitment in January. Out of luck. Also, you must be registered to participate in PPD on the 15th.
- PPD Absence Policy: This event is REQUIRED for all PNM's, but if you feel like your absence would be excused (interview, VU sports game, etc.), you can submit an absence application here. It is due by Nov 7th, no exceptions. *More details below.*
- PPD (Nov 15th)
- Recruitment 101 (Dec 7).
- Alcohol EDU make-up session (Dec 8 @ 6pm) - if you did not attend the August session

Panhellenic Preview Day: All you need to know
Read thoroughly so you're not confused and know what to expect next Sunday!
What is PPD?
PPD is a practice recruitment round, meaning you tour through all of the Panhellenic houses to see what they're about.
Who participates in PPD?
ALL Potential New Members (PNMs) who have registered and paid for Panhellenic Recruitment (link on Greek Life website). This is a mandatory event, so make sure you are there and at every single round throughout the day!
What goes on during the day? What do we do?
PPD is an all-day event (the exact logistics won't be released until after the registration deadline, Nov. 6). In the beginning, you'll meet on Commons with your Gamma Chi group (if you're a first year; upperclassmen will meet on main campus), they'll distribute t-shirts (t-shirts Panhellenic gives you, bought with your registration fee). Note: the shirts are white and unisex. Prepare accordingly.
Then, you'll walk with your Gamma Chi group to Greek row and you'll go to each house (all 10 of them) with your group. Your Gamma Chi will lead you to each house, so you don't have to worry about knowing where to be and when. During each "round" (one round = 15 minutes in a given house), you'll talk with active sorority women and get to know more about their chapter. You'll have a few off rounds, and during these you can go to the break room in Rand for food & crafts!
After you go through all 10 houses, you're done! That's it! Go back to your dorm, and think about your experiences.
What do we wear to PPD?
Like I said above, we will give you white T-shirts to wear for the day, so when you meet your Gamma Chi groups that morning, just wear [jeans/casual pants] + [boots/flats/any shoes that go with jeans]. Don't overthink what you're wearing, no one's judging you & it's very relaxed. :)
What's the point of PPD?
The point of PPD is to give you an idea of what formal recruitment will look like, and to practice having quality conversations so you're more prepared to really understand the character of each house during formal recruitment. Also, it should help de-stress you if you do have any small worries about recruitment, because PPD is meant to alleviate your fears and be casual.
What's the mood of PPD?
Like I said, casual. Relaxed, chill, friendly -- you're just there to talk casually with people. It's not an interview, they're not writing down everything you say. And just FYI: if you're nervous, the active sorority women are nervous, too! It's a two-way street, so just remember that.
What should I do to prepare for PPD?
Really? Nothing. Just relax, maybe read through each chapter's bio (see previous PNM Newsletters), and chill. If you're stressing out about PPD, you're doing something wrong there. Recruitment's not meant to be stressful - your classes are for that!
So there's pretty much the main highlights of what you need to know before PPD! It's one of the most fun days of recruitment, so get excited (and not stressed)!
Ask your Gamma Chi or me if you have additional questions.

Mythbusters
Don't pay attention to these common myths below! If you hear them around campus, keep these truths in mind. Don't be scared by any crazy rumors you hear -- they're circulated by misinformation and they're false!
- It doesn't matter when I register for recruitment. I know it's been said a million and one times, but...you should be registered now if you even faintly want to be in a sorority! The deadline is THIS WEEK. And by 5pm on Nov 6th.
- If I don't attend a sorority's philanthropy benefit, it will hurt my chances with them. No! 100% no. Sororities are not tracking when or if you are going to their benefits. These benefits are purely to raise money, and are not at all to do with recruitment. The entire school is invited, and their sole purpose is to raise money and awareness for their philanthropies. Go only if you're interested in supporting the cause and don't worry about how it will look if you do or don't go -- they're not looking, anyway!
- If I missed the alcohol edu training session at the beginning of the year, I am not eligible to participate in recruitment. YES, alcohol EDU is mandatory to participate in recruitment! However, there is a makeup session scheduled that you must be at if you did not attend the first: December 8th at 6pm in the SLC Board of Trust room.
- If I register for recruitment by midnight on November 6th, I'll still get in. No. The deadline is by 5pm on the 6th, no exceptions whatsoever. I don't care who you are or what tragedy befell you, you shall not pass.
Absence Policy During Recruitment
- It is due by November 7th by midnight for PPD absences. Note: PPD is 100% MANDATORY for all PNM's. It is just as required as Formal Recruitment Rounds. If you miss PPD without an excused absence verified by Panhellenic, this will be recorded & may negatively impact your recruitment process.
- It is due December 15th by midnight for Formal Recruitment absences.
- Your application will be reviewed and you will notified if your absence(s) is(are) excused by the Nov 11th for PPD absences & by the Pre-recruitment meeting January 8th for Formal Recruitment Absences.
- How seriously do we take attendance during PPD & Formal Recruitment Rounds? Panhellenic closely monitors which rounds PNM's go to throughout the day during both PPD & recruitment in January. So, you cannot secretively miss one round -- it will be recorded, and you will have to report to Panhellenic to discuss your absence.
- What will happen if I am considered excused? Panhellenic will tell the chapters that you are formally excused, so they will have the option to offer you a courtesy invitation or not. Being excused is not a guarantee; however, it significantly heightens the likelihood of getting invited back to the next round. If you don't show up, no one has to invite you back.
- What will happen if I am considered unexcused? If you are considered unexcused and miss anyway, it is grounds for release from the recruitment process.
