Things are still humming with excitement at BCS. In recent days we welcomed more kids back from quaranting and reached a milestone. Our PBIS Tube is half-filled so we held a celebration concert in the courtyard. The music was great and the kids had a blast. You can see photos and a short video on our facebook page:

SPECIAL NOTE
If you become aware of your child having a positive COVID test over the weekend (Friday after 4:00 p.m. to Monday before 7:00 a.m.) please email the principal as soon as you know. Waiting until schools open the following day is too hectic, and the advanced notice allows for a smoother contact tracing process. Also, again, if any student tests positive or shows any symptoms, they must stay home.

Second Step for October
Month 2: Skills for Learning
This month, our schoolwide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners. Second Step lessons teach skills for learning.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you’d like more suggestions about supporting skills for learning at home.
Social-Emotional Screening
As we have been doing for several years, we will be continuing to look out for the social-emotional skills of our students this year. Over two decades of research has helped us understand the important role social and emotional skills play in each child’s success in school, in the community, and, eventually, in higher education and the workplace. Skills such as demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, making good decisions, and working well in groups are all necessary to being successful students and adults. To support our students in developing these skills that will help them become successful and responsible adults, we implement Second Step in all grades and use PBIS to teach and manage behavioral expectations.
As part of this program, our teachers will update a social-emotional screening that we use with a tool called the DESSA. This tool asks teachers to assess how often a student has demonstrated specific life skills in the past month.
Sample DESSA questions include:
How often did the child keep trying when unsuccessful?
How often did the child offer to help somebody?
How often did the child get things done in a timely fashion?
How often did the child work well in groups?
The purpose of the DESSA is to identify which life skills your child has already learned and what skills they might still need to develop. Once our teachers identify the skills their students still need to learn, they will teach those skills using our existing Second Step and PBIS programs. Our goal is to ensure that your child is continuously developing the skills they need for lifelong success.
While the DESSA is just one component of our program this year, we want to make sure that you are informed of our use of this instructional tool. We believe that the information gathered from the DESSA will be beneficial to your child’s overall success both inside and outside of the classroom.

Emergency Broadband Benefit Available for Students Qualifying for Free and Reduced Price Meals & All Students at CEP Schools
Please be aware that the Emergency Broadband Benefit is available to any students at our school. The benefit provides up to a $50/month discount on internet service, and a one-time discount on a laptop, tablet or desktop computer. Households can provide their Free and Reduced Meals approval letter from School Year 19-20, 20-21, or 21-22 to qualify for this benefit. Please contact the office to get an appropriate letter.
