2020/21 Elementary Principal Update

April 11, 2021

Dear Families,

April 24 is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. The Armenian Genocide, which took place during World War I, resulted in the death of 1.5 million Armenians. Our schools will participate in a special remembrance activity on April 23. We received training from The Genocide Education Project., and this training, along with the support of our Armenian families, helped us learn how to present information to our students in an age-appropriate way. We plan on focusing on the rich Armenian culture, mainly through books that were donated to our school libraries. Some examples that are available are:

One Fine Day - A popular Armenian folktale

Once There Was and Was Not - Modern-day folktale

The Greedy Sparrow - An Armenian Tale (gr K-2)

Armenia - History, food culture (gr 1-2)

Aram's Choice - Armenian refugee journey. (gr 3-4)

Call Me Aram - (gr 3-4)

Under the Light of the Moon - A survival story. (gr 3-5)

Like Water on Stone - Historical novel of survival. (gr 6)

More Information will be shared about our April 23 activity, which will be a special craft. In this newsletter, we wanted to highlight some notable Armenians. We also wish to update you on other events happening in our schools.

Sincerely,

Emily Blaney, LCE Principal

Carrie Hetzel, PCY Principal

Updated Travel Restrictions

The Los Angeles County Travel Restrictions have been updated, and we wanted to share this with you today since some of you either changed your travel plans or were planning on a 10-day quarantine if you traveled out of state.

The guidelines can be found here.

If you traveled within the US and are fully vaccinated with two weeks of time passing since your second dose, there is no need to quarantine. At this time, this only pertains to adults.

If you are not fully vaccinated and traveled outside CA or the Country, you must quarantine. If you get a viral test 3-5 days after you arrive back in LA County and it is negative, your quarantine period is 7 days. Since our students are not vaccinated, this is the part to focus on. If parents can share a negative test result with the school, the quarantine period for the student(s) can be reduced from ten to 7 days.

If you are not fully vaccinated and you do not get a viral test 3-5 days after your arrival back in LA County, your quarantine period is 10 days.

Also, for those not fully vaccinated they must continue to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days after arrival back in Los Angeles County.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we navigate these changes together.

Calendar Changes

We are in the process of updating our calendars to reflect some of the cancelations that must happen as a result of our continued efforts to put an end to this Pandemic. Included in the cancelations are:

• CAASPP Testing (we will be administering internal assessments to our 3rd - 6th grade students prior to the end of the school year)

• Open House

• Some PTA Events (check your PTA newsletters)

Other events will take place but will be modified, including 6th grade promotions and Spring school photo days. Stay tuned for more information on those events.
