SEL Sports Clinic Session #2 Starting Up
Hi Everyone!
We are working on our next SEL Sports Clinic, which will be soccer. Coach Jose is a soccer guru so I am particularly excited to have him working on this with me! The Clinic is a 6-week clinic focused on social-emotional skills building while learning how to play soccer. Upperclass students will coach 1st and 2nd graders by organizing and running the clinic each week. All "practices" are rooted in a particular social-emotional lesson such as working as a teammate, sportsmanship, the 3Bs, etc.
We are looking for 1st and 2nd grade students who will benefit from a clinic. We want a balance of girls and boys. They do not have to be athletically-gifted, just open to trying it out. My goal is to have kids who need to: build self-esteem, work on aggressive behaviors, work on communication and SEL skills and general, build friendships, or who would benefit from even more adult-love in their lives.
Request: Would you please provide 5-6 names from each of you of students you recommend by Tuesday, January 31st?
--
We can have some of the same kids we had in basketball clinic but also looking to add some new kids who would benefit.
Thanks!
Coach C.
Buddies- Have them by 1/31
You need to have your cross grade level buddy meeting by 1/31. The tool of the month is Courage.
There are plenty of opportunities to discuss courage this month. You may want to link Courage to the upcoming Inauguration, to Black History Month, to the work of Dr. King, to introducing the history of the Black Panthers who began right in our neighborhood, to
Here are some ideas:
Write your own Toolbox Song like this School:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDlFjKduEA0
Do a March for Courage like Melrose Leadership Academy's March for Peace:
Get inspiration lesson plan from the Teaching Tolerance website:
Check out a Toolbox Books (They are in the library, you can check them out!) or from the Toolbox Binder (in the teacher's lounge).
If you haven't already, be sure to schedule your buddy class time!

Read A Thon!
This year's Read-a-Thon kicks off Friday, February 17th and ends on March 3rd. The theme is "Do you Know the Way to Glenview Santa Fe?"
The Read-a-Thon is a chance to inspire kids, and grown-ups, to read, read and read some more.
In addition to being good fun, the Read-a-Thon is our school’s biggest fundraiser. The goal is for every single student to have a good time reading, and in the process, to raise $65,000 for art, science, physical education, reading intervention, field trips, classroom supplies, social emotional learning and other basic school necessities at Glenview.
Students will keep track of their reading and ask family, friends and neighbors to donate to Glenview for their reading efforts.
Please mark your calendars for these Read-a-Thon events:
Friday, February 17 – Read-a-Thon packets go home.
Tuesday, February 21 – Park Burger (4218 Park Blvd.) will donate 15% of your bill to the Read-a-Thon.
Sunday, February 26 – Ultimate Grounds (4225 Park Blvd.) will give away coffee and baked treats to anyone at the café who donates $5 to the Read-a-Thon.
Sunday, February 26 - Relic Movement (4231 Park Blvd. ) will host a free family yoga day during the coffee hours. All donations will go towards the Glenview Read-a-Thon
Tuesday, February 28 – Again, Park Burger will generously donate 15% of sales to the Read-a-Thon.
Friday, March 3 – Celebration of Literacy. Special guest readers will visit each classroom to read books and to share stories with the kids. Wear PJ’s to school, if you like.
Friday, March 3 – The Read-a-Thon Ends. Turn in your donations and reading log for prizes and for the satisfaction of it all.
Stay tuned for more information about "Do you Know the Way to Glenview Santa Fe?". Please contact the Read-a-Thon Team with questions, or to volunteer to lend a hand: glenviewreadathon@gmail.com (Roberta Masliyah)
Thanks, Lisa Newby
1.) Pass out all Read-a-thon info packets on time (February 17th).
2.) Talk up the Read-a-Thon to your class. We want to encourage the students that this is a fun reading challenge, but we are also trying to raise money for our school. Some kids will not be able to raise the money but we want to encourage donations of any amount and completed reading logs. All classes that complete their reading logs and turn them in ON the due date (3/3) will get entered in the pizza party raffle. Highest earners get to have lunch with Mrs. Toller at Lois the Pie Queen.
3.) Add Read-a-Thon information in your weekly newsletter.
4.) Pick a goal for your class. Mr. Miller will share how he does it each year. He picks a reading log goal and a money goal. As many of you know he cuts his hair if his kids meet their goal.
5.) Let us know what your class incentive is. We've had a teacher do the ice bucket challenge, make up a dance and perform for their class or the school, dress up in something funny for the day, eat something weird, play live music for their kids, and much more!
6.) Help your new colleagues get on board and answer any questions they may have. Let us know if you have questions. (lisa.lefrak-newby@ousd.org)
7.) The Facebook videos explaining how much the PTA funding helps you and your kids were a huge hit last fall. If you would be willing to make a quick video with you or your kids we WOULD LOVE THAT!!!! John Miller can record it or you can make it and text it to me at 510-207-3559.
8.) Pass out any new flyers that come through
9.) Prepare of the Day of Literacy ( Pajama Day) on Friday 3/3-Readers will come to your class to read stories between 9-2. Schedules will come out as we get closer.
10) Email me or Roberta Masliyah (glenviewreadathon@gmail.com)
11.) Lastly, be patient....we have a new team of people running the Read-a-Thon this year and we are doing the best we can!
Thank you for your continual support!!! With your help we are determined to make the goal of $65,000 !!!!!!!!!!!!

Updated Prep Schedule & Updated Yard Duty Schedule
You will receive a draft of the Prep Schedule in your boxes on Monday, January 23. Please have any concerns or questions to Ms. Morgan by Weds. 1/25 so she can update.
This revised schedule will start on Monday, January 30. This is your
The new Yard Duty schedule will be ready for review by midweek.
Faculty Council Notes
Faculty Council Notes from Meeting Held on 1/24
FC Members in attendance: Mr. Wolfe, Ms. Michelle, Ms. Shreve, Mr. Granda, Ms. Toller
Concern #1:
It’s difficult to plan for PE activities without knowing what part of the yard is in use.
Suggested Solution:
Create a PE schedule with time of day and part of yard used (four square, basketball court, field, track, 2 square, etc.).
FC Response:
The FC grappled with what kind of schedule would work. Due to weather which changes PE schedules daily and weekly, as well as a schedule that would need to change as people choose different areas, concerns arose around how to monitor and communicate a schedule seemed challenging. FC is open to a draft schedule to review if a teacher would like to create one.
Other FC suggestions were:
1) Come up with more than one PE game to play so you have a Plan a and a Plan B before you go out. The Playworks binder has a ton of easy great games.
2) Communicate with colleagues in the space you were planning for to see about sharing space or sharing a game (asking them how much longer they will be there, etc.)
3) Be creative with space- the area near the stairs with the numbers, use the four square area to play switch, use cones to create spaces, use the squares near the corner of 53rd and Adeline (this is a big area).
4) The grass will dry soon which will open up more space
Concern #2:
People are still dumping food leftovers in the sink in the teacher’s lounge. It is clogged. This causes additional work for Ms. Renata and attracts rodents and insects.
Suggested Solution:
There is a huge garbage can 5 steps from the sink that can be used for that purpose.
FC Solution: FC agrees with the suggestion and encourages everyone to be mindful of common spaces.
Concern #3:
There seems to be a culture developing where students run into the buildings before school and during recess.
Solution:
Provide incentive for students who are walking
Ask students not to be in the building without direct supervision
FC Solution:
In addition to the ideas suggested, there will be a teacher assigned for morning recess to the main hall to monitor students effective 1/30.
Concern #4
There is not enough coverage during the 10:15 recess
Solution:
We need another another person at the corner of Adeline and 53rd.
FC Solution:
FC agrees, another AM person assigned effective 1/30
Have a concern? Want to raise an issue?
Next Meeting will be Tuesday, February 28th.
