DUFFLE BAGS are optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and this may be the only chance to get them in time for all the Fall band activities. Orders will ship directly to your home when ready. Production of all items begins after the store closes and should be received approximately 3 weeks later.

Shop here on our website under Jag Swag.

ORDER BY AUGUST 14 - This store closes automatically, so check their countdown clock! Items should be received prior to our first competition. Ice, Ice, Baby!

Last week, the parent volunteers at the Band Aid tent noticed that students kept asking to refill ice at the first aid station. Please make sure your student fills their entire jug with ice and then adds water before leaving for school in the morning. They can always refill water, but they can't refill ice. We will not have enough ice for 240+ jugs after filling 2 cows and icing beverages for meals. If they fill it completely in the morning, it should last into the afternoon.

BAND AND GUARD WORK DAY!

Build Props!

Sewing & Hemming Bibbers Day!

We are looking for volunteers with some basic sewing experience to sew hems and stirrups on the bibbers (pants). The sewing is straight and simple. We will show you how! We will be at the band hall on Saturday Aug. 20th from 10am to 2 pm. We will have some sewing machines but if you have one you can bring that would be great! Please click here to sign up!

Guard tunics: help make those hot tunics sleeveless!

Please join us in making our color guard tunics sleeveless. No sewing necessary! All you need are scissors, an iron, and an ironing board! We will provide the heat bond! Join us or take some home! We will be at the band hall on Saturday, Aug. 20th, 9am - 4pm! Please click here to sign up!

If you are having financial difficulties and need assistance with uniform supplies or meals (not fees), please know that you can contact your JHS Boosters for hardship assistance via Carmen Sifuentes at vp@johnsonbands.com.

If you need to make payment arrangements or financial assistance regarding fees, please contact Mr. Lucita at Joey.Lucita@hayscisd.net

Quotes for a Cause

George Torres Farmers Insurance has partnered with to provide a unique opportunity to

raise money to support the JHS Band by requesting your free, no-obligation insurance quote! The goal is to raise money for the band and to give families peace of mind that they are paying a reasonable amount when it comes to insurance. His agency specializes in reducing student driver cost on family auto insurance. His agency will donate $10 to the JHS Band for each family that completes the attached quick survey. Your information will solely be utilized for a one-time, no-obligation quote and will be deleted once completed. There is no cap on how many families can participate in this opportunity but you must be over 18 years of age to receive a quote. Less than 1 minute to complete the survey could add up to an immeasurable amount of support for JHS Band. Plus, you might even save a lot on your insurance! Act quickly and share - the survey and this opportunity will only last through the Jaguar Jog on September 17th!

Section GroupMe

Have you joined your section's GroupMe group yet? If not, email Carmen Sifuentes at vp@johnsonbands.com and she will get you connected to the right person.

What is GroupMe?

GroupMe is a two-way communication app (can also be accessed on the GroupMe website on a computer). Each section has a Parent Section Lead. These PSL's each host their section's GroupMe. Your Section GroupMe is a great place to ask questions to other parents. If your PSL does not know the answer, they will check with a Board Member and get the information you need, or point you in the right direction. The Band Boosters also share important information over GroupMe that might not be emailed or shared on FB (like reminders).

US Bands San Antonio Showcase

From the director

And just like that Summer Band is a wrap!! First we want to thank our wonderful parents for helping with all aspects of summer band! Our Med-Tent volunteers, our Uniform volunteers and our Meal Plan volunteers! What an awesome job done by each. We also want to thank those parents that helped turn the Band Hall into a Winter Wonderland on Friday, helping celebrate the students wrap up their Band Winter Olympics! What a weird and wonderful way to finish the week! :).

Speaking of wrapping up, we can not begin to brag on our students enough for the work ethic and energy that they brought to summer band every day!! In one of the hottest summers on record, they pushed through the heat and never quit working! We are super proud and impressed. We have learned drill for parts 1 & 2; have learned the music for parts 1, 2 & 3; and, have begun learning music for part 4! What a great start to the 2022 - 23 Marching Season! We have to keep this momentum moving forward as we continue into a history-making season, not only for Johnson High School but Hays CISD as well!!

This week is our first week of school, and it is important that we make sure we do not let the change to our daily schedule cause an impact on our progress! Everyone must remember to bring their instrument, water jug and a change of clothes for practice this week. We know there will be a ton of excitement as everyone gets to meet their teachers, meet the students in their classes and get to experience life as a high schooler at Johnson HS! However, it is extremely important that when the bell rings to dismiss school you head immediately down to the Band Hall to change clothes and get ready for rehearsal to start at 5 p.m.! Remember, our regular weekly after-school schedule is Monday & Tuesday 5 - 8 p.m. and Thursday 5 - 7 p.m. Please remember that all tutorials, appointments and meetings should be scheduled on any morning Monday - Thursday or after school on Wednesday. We will have a one hour practice on game days to run through the show and to rehearse with the Rosettes for their performance. Times for game day rehearsals are 7 - 8 a.m.

As we approach our first football game please note that you will receive a detailed schedule for that game day early in the week of each game.
If there is a marching competition on that weekend, the schedule will reflect the game and competition. We will typically find out our performance time at each contest either the week before the contest or early in the week of the contest.

Speaking of schedules, please plan to be at the Band Hall to pick your student up no later than 15 minutes after the published time for the end of rehearsals or when we return from games or contests. We do our very best to stay on schedule and will use remind to let everyone know our progress as we depart our location on the way home. Please do not wait until we arrive before you depart to pick up your student. This will allow everyone to get home at the earliest time possible.

Now that school is starting, the lesson teachers will beginning to implement their lesson schedule and times. If you or your student have not already spoken to the private lesson staff about lessons, we encourage you to do so. Private lessons are a major part of our success as a band program. During our class time, with 50+ students students in each band class, we can not give each student the individual analysis and attention that a private lesson can provide! We encourage all students to get enrolled in lessons.

We want to close this newsletter with the same concept that we started. What a great Summer Band and how awesome our students handled the long hours and heat! Let’s keep it going! Enjoy your Monday off, and, as always, “It’s A Great Day To Be A Jaguar”!

The Beat--A Weekly Update for Percussion-Specific Information

SUMMER BAND IS OVER!!!! WE MADE IT!!! This was by far the most productive summer band the percussion section has ever had. The amount of growth over the past 3 weeks was incredible! I am so proud of the students! Their work ethic was awesome and not once did I hear any complaints or negativity. The students really came together, continuing to form those bonds that are so important to the success of the group. I absolutely cannot wait to see what this group is able to accomplish!

School starts Tuesday and so does our after school rehearsal schedule. Please check the calendar for a list of all practice dates and times.

We are going to a new block schedule for the upcoming year. The current schedule is as follows for percussion:

Battery students will be in percussion class 1st and 5th periods.

Front Ensemble students will be in percussion class 2nd and 6th periods

Band classes are double blocked meaning that they meet everyday for 90 minutes. We realize some students may have conflicts with this and other electives. Those conflicts will be handled on an individual basis. Please contact me and we can work together to make sure all students are accommodated. The counselors are willing to help us get students in the right classes. Please be patient as these conflicts are resolved. We will have almost 3000 students attending Johnson HS this year!

COMMUNICATION

Most communication for our band program goes out through Charms and Remind. Any Percussion specific info will be sent out via our Percussion Remind. I encourage all parents to sign up. This will hopefully keep you informed of upcoming percussion events, news, info, etc.

To sign up, simply text @jagsperc22 to the number 81010.

Staying Informed

Staying Informed! The Jaguar Band strives to keep everyone informed about our events and increase the opportunity to answer questions and create conversations with our community. This year, you will be able to find out information not only in our Newsletter and on our Band Calendar, but we will also be sharing them on our Johnson Band website events page and as events on our Facebook page. Our events on Facebook will be used as a primary source for updates and reminders. Don't forget to use your section GroupMe's as a quick and effective way to get your questions answered!

Service Hours

The JHS Band Boosters have created a form for band students to track their band volunteer service hours. (Click the previous sentence to link to the form.) This form is similar to what is used by other organizations such as the NHS and puts control of volunteer service hours tracking in the students hands. Students should print and use this to log for all band related volunteer service hours and ensure completion of all fields including supervisor signature. Parents signatures are not accepted. Follow all details on the form to turn in the logs in the spring to be considered for Band Student Service Awards at the Band Banquet or for logging volunteer service for Letterman Jacket points. Any questions, contact banquet@johnsonbands.com or secretary@johnsonbands.com. This form should be used for all hours since the Band Banquet last spring. Multiple forms may be submitted to track all of your volunteer service.
