Newsletter Week 4 -Term 2 2021
St Joseph's Catholic School Morrinsville May 25th 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora Koutou,
Well done to our Lit Quiz Team who attended the WaikatoLit Quiz last week in Hamilton. The team of Brooke Devaney, Emma Van Vliet, Abby Sommerhalder and Hannah Findson showed great knowledge amongst the many students from around the Waikato. The team was placed 22nd out of 54 teams, being one of our best ever performances. Well done team for a great effort.
Today, most of our year 3-6 students have attended a Rugby/Netball Fun Day held at Campbell Park. We want to say a big thank you to the parents and friends who have offered to coach, ref and umpire our teams. It is so difficult to enter competitions without this incredible support. Thank you! Our four rugby teams and five netball teams had a great time.
This Sunday we have a group of children who are receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. This will take place at St Joseph's Te Aroha at 2 pm. All welcome to attend. We are very proud of our group as this is the second of three sacraments they will make this year.
Sending a big thank you to Daniel Sommerhalder for answering our SOS call and coming to our rescue by fixing our unhinged sport shed door. Back in action now thanks to your expertise. Cheers.
Just a reminder that we have a Teacher's Only Day on Friday 4 June. School will be closed as the staff are working offsite. Please arrange alternative care for your children on this day.
We wish to advise that with nationwide changes within the banking system, cheques are being phased out of use. Therefore, we as a school we are no longer able to accept cheques as a form of payment. We will continue to take payments in the form of cash or online. Thank you for your co-operation with regards to this.
We know you are going to enjoy the Student-Led Conferences today and tomorrow. Thank you for making the time to come and see what your child is learning. If you require further follow up with the teacher, do not hesitate to make an appointment at a convenient time for you.
Have a fantastic week, take care and God bless.

Student Led Conferences
Wednesday 26 May 3:00 - 5:00 pm
This week we are hosting our Student Led Conferences. We are wanting to build learner agency throughout our school and a big part of this is our students having ownership of what they are learning as well as becoming independent thinkers and learners.
Our students are so excited to share their learning with you! We please ask that you arrive promptly to your appointment and show the courtesy of not running over time into others. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you.
Gumboot Friday 28 May
Why gumboots?
For people struggling with depression, it can feel like walking through mud every day.
So on , we're asking you Gumboot Friday, to show your support. Put your gumboots on, give a gold coin, and take a walk in their shoes for just one day.
It's a fun way for kiwis to join in the mental health conversation, while raising money to provide free and timely counselling for any young person in need.
Wear your casual clothes, put on your gumboots and head to school. Don't forget to bring a gold coin donation. Our student Alison is leading this day in our school. She has organised some gumboot games so bring some spare coins to participate.

What do you know about Tik Tok?
Is TikTok Safe?
This depends on how it is being used. Like many social media platforms, there are risks associated with using TikTok, enabling privacy settings and heavy parental supervision are key to managing these risks. Some of the key concerns are: privacy, inappropriate content, dangerous or inappropriate Challenges, and interaction with strangers.
What is the Minimum Age to Use TikTok?
TikTok requires users to be 13+ to use the platform, however, due to the diverse nature of content that can be discovered on the app (some of which is not appropriate for young users) and privacy concerns, we recommend that users be at least 15 years of age and that there be a high level of parental supervision.
How Does TikTok Work?
TikTok is an app that can be downloaded on Android and iOS devices. You do not require a TikTok account to download the app or watch videos. Users can use TikTok purely as content consumers (people who watch the videos but don’t create and share content themselves) or as creators (people who participate in creating and sharing videos).
When a user signs up to create a TikTok account, the default privacy settings that apply are determined by the user’s age. If a user is between 13 and 15 years old, extra privacy precautions will be available. For example, users in this age category will have their accounts set to private by default (the account can still be made public manually). In contrast, a user who is over the age of 15 will automatically have their account set to public when they sign up. The availability of other privacy impacting features, such as strangers being able to comment on your posts, other users having the ability to download your videos, and who is able to ‘duet’ (create and share videos side-by-side with your videos) your videos, are also influenced by age. For these reasons, it is important to use your child’s actual birth year if/when you sign them up for an
Videos shared on TikTok are grouped by hashtags, which often correspond to trends or challenges. Users can search for content using these hashtags or for specific creators by name/username. Videos are also discoverable through the users ‘For You Page’ (think the Facebook newsfeed equivalent) which is the first page that appears when you open the app.

Reflection
Confirmation
During Confirmation, the focus is on the Holy Spirit, who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost and gave them courage to practice their faith. Catholics believe that the same Holy Spirit confirms Catholics during the Sacrament of Confirmation and gives them the same gifts.
