Poetry journals
Each week, we add a new poem to our poetry journals. This helps us with reading fluency.
Main standard (many practiced)
*With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for Grade 1. [RL.1.10]Pumpkin Math
We did so many things this week with pumpkins and math. Before we opened the pumpkin, learners predicted how many seeds there were inside. After we opened up the pumpkin and cleaned it out, learners got into groups to count the seeds. Each group counted by 5s or 10s. Then, we added the sum. We had 549 seeds in our pumpkin. We completed some investigations with the pumpkin also, finding the weight, circumference, height. We toasted the pumpkin seeds. Ask your learner if they liked them.

The rhinoceros hornbill is a bird that lives in the Rainforest. It has a horn on top of its beak that makes it look like it has 2 beaks.
Raindrops
It takes 10 minutes for a raindrop to travel from the canopy to the forest floor.
The Rainforest is helpful
Many medicines come from the Rainforest.
Reptiles
The caiman lives in the Amazon River. It is a small alligator.
Largest snake
The anaconda lives in the Rainforest. It is just shorter than a school bus and weighs more than a piano.
more than just a sloth
Sloths can carry algae, beetles and roaches in their fur.

31 THINGS YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE DOING RATHER THAN HOMEWORK
Here is a great article that encourages outdoor play, conversations, and unstructured activities and NOT one of them involves a screen.
Sumdog
In your child's Take-home folder, there is a a username and password to a math app called Sumdog. We introduced it this week and learners have had an opportunity to utilize it at school. This is a way to practice math skills at home. My own children love it. Please let me know your thoughts.
Each learner needs...
Since we introduced Ipads this week, learners are excited about visiting that center. Each learner needs a pair of earbuds or headphones that can stay in their backpacks.
