Dear Northern High School Community,
Haga clic aqui’ para leer in Espanol Links to an external site.
We hope that you are doing well. As we close out the semester, final exams are a part of that process. We have State-mandated End-of-Course Tests and CTE Post-Assessments along with teacher-made/District-made exams.
Please be aware of the guidelines for in-person testing sessions and prepare accordingly:
- Only students that are scheduled to test should come to school on their assigned testing days. Students that are not testing, will be monitored in the auditorium or various classrooms as we need to maintain quiet and order for testing.
- Students must bring their fully charged DPS device for testing. Students should bring their computer chargers as well.
- All students are encouraged but not required to wear approved masks while inside the building. Students will be provided masks if they would like one.
- Students must be present at the beginning of each exam period to take the exam.
- Students will not be allowed to have cell phones, including smart watches and earbuds, during exam periods. These devices must be powered off and put away before all testing sessions. Students will be given instructions about the use of electronic devices after testing.
- Students will not be allowed to leave when they finish. They will be dismissed when testing has ended.
- In all courses, the final exam will count 20% of the student’s final grade.
Exam Exemption Policy: Taken from the September 23, 2021 School Board Meeting
Based on feedback and support from High School Principals, staff recommends to suspend the attendance portion of Policy Code: 3410 Testing and Assessment Program for the 2021-2022 school year.
High school students may be exempt from their non-state-mandated (teacher made) final exams if they meet one of the following conditions, detailed below.
For 90 day courses:
- Have an “A” average.
- Have a “B” average.
Students who are exempt from an exam may elect to take the exam. The grade will count only if it improves the student’s overall grade. This final exam exemption does not apply to courses offered through community colleges, universities, or online services.

COVID TESTING @ NHS:
Durham Public Schools, in partnership with MAKO Medical, will begin providing weekly COVID-19 testing at school to help identify possible COVID-19 infections among students even if they’re not showing any symptoms. Research has shown such testing can reduce the spread by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools.
The testing is a simple swab of the nose and not the test that tickles the brain. This is the same test families can administer from home or at local testing sites.
This is a voluntary testing process, so a parent or guardian must register their student to participate. The link to register is here (paper copy found here) as well as a letter sent home with your student. All testing information and results will remain confidential.
