Breaking New Ground
On December 19, we were privileged to be witness to some firsts in the history of our District. On that night, eight students graduated from the Ludi Peña Martin Accelerated Eduation Center, members of the first graduating class since the campus was renamed to honor Ludi Peña Martin.
This night also marked the first time that a graduate of the Martin Center has earned college credits while also completing a high school diploma, Two of our students, Ariel Hunter and Stephen Gibson, accomplished this impressive feat.
Ariel is only the second student in the history of the campus to graduate under the Foundation High School Program while earning a distinguished level of achievement. To do this, Ariel had to complete additional coursework, including extra credits in mathematics and science, beyond that required for graduation.
Ariel is the 16 year old daughter of Cynthia and Khrimsun (Lidj) Hunter. She spent most of her formative years in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where her father was stationed as a member of the US Navy. Both of her parents are Texas Panhandle natives, and she moved to Perryton in May of 2018. Ariel’s plans for the future include a career in nursing, traveling as much as possible, and enjoying time with her family.
Stephen Gipson is the 19 year old son of Cathy Gipson and the grandson of Lois Stroup. He is incredibly kind hearted and spends much of his time helping to care for his disabled mother. Stephen also works at United Supermarkets and volunteers at the Panhandle Crisis Center. In his spare time, he enjoys working on cars. Stephen plans to go to school and study diesel mechanics with the hope to open his own shop one day.
The two remarkable young people are credits to our community. We could not be more proud of them and their accomplishments. We are also proud of their six classmates, and of the dedicated staff of the LPMAEC.
