General Updates and Important Information
REMINDER: Spirit Days
Remember, Mavericks, you're where you belong...make us proud! Every week, we have TWO spirit days...on Wednesdays, we promote colleges and careers. Feel free to wear your favorite college or career shirts/hoodies/sweats for the day. And of course, Fridays are always Maverick days...wear your favorite Murphy Maverick gear or red/black/white. We're excited to see everyone in this together!
REMINDER: Cell Phones/AirPods/Personal Devices:
Students: The Junior High district policy is that cell phones are off and out of sight from 8:10am-3:10pm. Cell phones and other personal devices will be confiscated if they are in sight during the school day. Consequences may be issued. So far, so good!
Parents: Please be sure to have a discussion with your student regarding cell phones and other devices during the school day. Our focus on academics is a priority and the use of cell phones for personal use takes away from our focus. We appreciate your understanding. If you need to reach your student, it is important that you contact the main office to share a message. We can get that message to your child.
REMINDER: Student Rights and Responsibilities Form:
The student Rights and Responsibilities form is LIVE in TylerSIS. Please be sure to read through the expectations and sign the form.
DOUBLE GOOD Popcorn Fundraiser
Our staff was given some samples of Double Good popcorn and the response and feedback was that it was AWESOME! Be on the lookout for more information coming out next week. The fundraiser will run for only FOUR DAYS, starting Thursday, September 15th at 6:00pm (when The Bulletin comes out).
Why do you need popcorn?...because it's:
- a great addition to at home movie night
- a great snack
- a great gift or addition to a gift
- a great "thank you" to a friend, family member, or co-worker
- JUST YUMMY!
Ordering information will be sent out next week...it's easy and convenient...the popcorn is sent DIRECTLY to your house!
Thank you for your support!!
Mutual Ground Information
Dear Parents,
This year our school is partnering with Mutual Ground, Inc. to provide Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Education programming to our students. Mutual Ground has been providing programs to students for over 30 years. Additionally, legislation in our state called Erin’s Law requires all public schools in Illinois develop a comprehensive plan for sexual violence prevention education.
As a part of this plan, Mutual Ground’s Prevention Education Department will be presenting a Sexual Violence Prevention Program in your child’s classroom or via online presentations. This program will discuss sexual violence prevention at an age appropriate level for our students as outlined below.
Sexual Harassment Prevention: Topics covered include:
Definition of Sexual Harassment and that school should be a safe, harassment-free environment
Identify types of sexual harassment including the use of technology
Recognize the feelings associated with Sexual Harassment
Safety Planning and accessing resources
Sexual Violence Prevention: Topics covered include:
Definitions of touch and non-touch sexual crimes
Facts about sexual violence and situations in which it occurs
Emphasizing the fact that sexual violence is NEVER THE VICTIM’S FAULT
Risk reduction, prevention strategies and safety planning
These programs are designed to Educate students regarding forms of sexual violence and harassment, Inform them on what to do if it happens to them, and Empower them by giving them permission to tell a trusted adult.
Our district is committed to the safety and well-being of our students and that is why we feel that providing this programming is so important. If you have any further questions please feel free to call Rhonda Annala, Mutual Ground’s Prevention Education Manager, at (630) 897-0084 X107.
Please contact Murphy Jr. High Assistant Principals by email to discuss special circumstances.

Murphy Career Day
Hello Murphy Jr. High Community,
Several years ago, our school organized a career day where parents from a variety of professions came to school to discuss their careers with our students. We would like to provide a similar experience for students this school year as well, and we need your help. We are looking for anyone interested in visiting the school to share their career with our students. Presentations would be 20-25 minutes each, focusing on the duties of the career as well as the preparation needed (i.e. high school classes, vocational training, community college/university). If you are interested in helping our students learn more about your profession and you are available the morning of October 7th, please fill out the form linked below and we will reach out.

Thank you in advance,

AVID Maverick Market
The Maverick Market, our school store, is opening soon! Our AVID students are working diligently to prepare for the grand opening! The store gives all students opportunities to cash in their Bullseyes that are earned for making good choices throughout the week. However, we need your help!
We are respectfully asking for donations for the following items:
Individually wrapped small sized candy (jolly ranchers, mints, etc.)
Gift cards in smaller dollar amounts ($5, $10, $15) to places like: McDonalds, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Five Below, etc.)
Small fidgets (stress balls, rubix cube, putty, or other sensory items)
Mechanical pencils or fun writing utensils
Other items you feel would entice our diverse student population to continue to employ strong character within our school and community.
Disclaimer: At this time snack items and gum should not be donated.
We thank you in advance for your generosity in regards to stocking The Maverick Market! We cannot wait to see your student there!
Sincerely,
The AVID Team

Student Services Information
September is National Suicide Prevention Month
SD308 and Murphy Junior High educates our junior high students with the evidence-based Signs of Suicide program. SOS Signs teaches students how to identify signs of depression and suicide in themselves and their peers, and how to take appropriate action. This program will be implemented later this school year and parents/guardians will be given additional information and advance notice.
In past years, Murphy has partnered with the nonprofit organization, Elyssa’s Mission, which is an organization that brings the SOS program into schools free of charge. From the Elyssa’s Mission website: “It is vital that we all learn the warning signs for depression and suicide and remember to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) if we are worried about a loved one. The best way to prevent suicide is to know what to look for and understand how to help someone who may be at-risk.”
For more information on Elyssa’s Mission and the Signs of Suicide program, please visit the website here: https://elyssasmission.org/
If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, these free, confidential resources are available 24/7:
