News from WCS | February 8, 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As you know, we recently read the book The Invisible Boy at our last all-school meeting and we were so impressed with the way students responded to the moral of the story! Our mission is to continuously build a school climate forged in equity and inclusion. With Valentine’s Day parties scheduled for next week, it was a great time to revisit the concept of inclusion (as it relates to handing out valentines). If you would like, we are including a comprehension question below that you may wish to ask your child.
“Maybe, just maybe, Brian’s not so invisible after all. What specifically did Justin do to make Brian feel less invisible?”
Recently, several staff members participated in a professional learning workshop led by Dr. Kim Marshall, who is the author of our evaluation framework. He spoke to teachers and administrators about a theory of curriculum development called “Understanding by Design.” This approach is rooted in the concept of “backwards design” where one plans first with intended goals/outcomes. In order to ensure top-notch communication, we will be mapping curriculum units of content areas into one document over the next several weeks. There are numerous working parts to a normal school day and this will ensure that each department in the school has a great understanding of what we teach and when we teach it! For example, physical education teachers will know exactly when fractions are being taught in order to inform their own instruction.
Next week, we are excited for Ski Club to begin with students visiting Pat’s Peak. Please familiarize yourself with the updated drop-off procedure that will go into effect on Thursday, February 14. In addition, students are excited for the start of Floor Hockey that begins on Wednesday, February 13. This is an exciting club activity and we look forward to the championship match with WCS Staff scheduled later in March!
We are thankful for the WPD and WFD for their assistance yesterday morning. As you may know, slick road conditions caused a motor vehicle accident with bus W13. All students were unharmed and our top priority was ensuring their safe arrival to WCS (and GBS). We were proud to see our students handle the situation with grace and maturity despite it being a difficult experience. Thank you to our parents and guardians for their unwavering support as we swiftly worked to address the situation.

We are just over a month away from Kids Vote! Our school will narrow down these FIVE choices to TWO after morning announcements next Friday.
Option 1: Water Balloon Toss (Last year's winner)
Option 2: Soccer (Last year's winner)
Option 3: Talent Show
Option 4: Karaoke Station
Option 5: Kickball Game
Then, on March 12 at Kids Vote, students will have an opportunity to vote on the final two options. The winning option will be added to Field Day this June!
