January and Februarys all about ALGEBRA! Chapter 7, 6th grade students extend their understanding of exponents to other whole number bases. They learn to switch between expressions with exponents and repeated factors. They also apply the order of operations to expressions that include exponents. In this chapter, students build on their knowledge
of numerical expressions to write algebraic expressions and use them in problem solving. Skills learned in Chapter 7 will carry-over into the content of later chapters in Grade 6 when students will explore equations and inequalities as well as the relationships between variables (Chapters 8 and 9).

5th Grade
Studying theme is the first reading lesson of January, where our kids learn the lesson or general message of a passage using details from the text.
In writing, the fifth grade will be learning the structure of an informational text writing (5 paragraph essay) , as they use multiple print or digital sources to analyze text.
Grammar and Reading skills coming up next:
1. Understanding of figurative language such as similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, and many more
2. Demonstration of the use of perfect verb tenses
3. Explanation of how chapters, scenes, or stanzas fit together to provide overall structure to a story, poem or drama.
6th Grade
Students are also in the beginning stages of taking two similar passages and analyzing them for a compare and contrast essay. Learning the outline of this type of reading/writing is the first important step. Our kids will notice that the structure of all the informative essays are similar, but have a few different elements to show the distinction between them.
Grammar and Reading skills coming up:
1. Figurative Language
2. Anecdotes
3. Point of View and how an author or speaker in a text develops that.
