At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
Season's Greetings!
I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are looking forward to a busy and exciting December. It has been a busy time at school! It is time for the Franklin Mall project and I hope we are going to have a lot of canned goods and other items to share with others! Sharing and giving to others is such an important lesson to teach children. I thank you for your support in the project!
This month, I would like to stress the importance of school attendance. Schools are responsible for teaching your child. But schools can’t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by day. A child who misses a day of school misses a day of learning.
According to research, attendance is the single most important factor in school success. Children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year. Children can make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher, and the thinking that makes learning come alive.
Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background- one that is gained by regular school attendance. According to The Parent Institute, here are some tips regarding school attendance:
- Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
- Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
- Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.
- Don’t accept excuses for why your child “must” miss or be late for school.
- Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
- Support school rules and consequences in regards to attendance.
- Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
- Lead by example. If children see parents taking off work for no reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.
I hope that these tips will help when issues of school attendance arise with your child.
Once again, I would like to thank you for all of your support with your children. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

Just a Few Reminders
**To report an absence, parents or guardians are to call the OFFICE at 815-786-8812 before 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence. An answering machine will take calls before 7:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. If a phone call is not received, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact a parents or guardian. If contact cannot be made, the absence will be considered UNEXCUSED. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Please be reminded that school is in session from 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Students who arrive late to school are considered tardy and need to sign in at the office. Please make sure your child(ren) arrive before the tardy bell rings.
**Thank you to everyone that uses the hot lunch program and for keeping a positive balance on your account. When sending in lunch money with your student, please remember to put the first and last name of the student, their grade, and also indicate “lunch money” on the envelope. You can also load money via the Tyler Student Information Portal.
**Anyone adult entering the building please remember to stop by the office first to sign in. If your student is late arriving, you must come into the office to sign them in.
**Parents/Guardians….If your child is going home a different way or being picked up by someone else, please send a note with your student to their teacher. Inclement Weather Policy
Winter weather is just around the corner. It is important that children are dressed properly to go outside for recess. When the wind chill is 10 degrees or higher, we will be going outside for recess. It is important that our children have the ability to run around and get some exercise. Weather will be checked prior to each recess to verify the wind chill.
In addition, the district website (www.sandwich430.org) will contain information regarding school closings. If a school is closed for an emergency during the day, parents will be notified by a SchoolMessenger phone call. Please be sure you have discussed a plan with your child in case of an early dismissal.

Haskin is participating, along with the Sandwich Lions Club, in the Franklin Mall Project this year. This mission collects items for the underprivileged in our area. A note will be going home soon that will give details of the "crazy collection" week we have planned this month. Canned and boxed dry goods, as well as household supplies will be collected at school through December 18th. If you or your student would like to make a monetary donation instead, that would also be welcomed.

Health News From The School Nurse
Health Tips From The School Nurse
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
· Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have fever)
· Cough
· Sore throat
· Runny or stuffy nose
· Muscle or body aches
· Headaches
· Fatigue (tiredness)
· Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
Protect yourself and your children with a flu shot. Contact your physician, health department, or clinics for an appointment.
Guidelines to follow when ill with the flu:
· Stay home when sick. Students should be kept home if they have a fever of > 100 degrees F along with a cough and/or sore throat. Students should stay home for at least 24-hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
· Follow basic health hygiene practices to limit the spread of illness, like the 3 Cs (Clean, cover, and contain.)
Clean—wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
Cover—your cough or sneeze with your elbow or sleeve.
Contain—students should stay home if they’re sick.
· We also ask that when you call your students in sick, please indicate if they have a fever of > 100 along with a cough and /or sore throat.
We at Sandwich School District #430 are working hard to promote a safe and healthy learning environment. We understand that children can’t learn if they are sick.

The kindergarteners at Haskin had a busy month in November! They spent the month learning and discussing families. To celebrate their families, they made a family turkey at home with the help of their family members. They also completed a house glyph which showed how many people/pets live in their house. In addition to learning about families, the kindergarteners learned about the Pilgrims, the Wampanoag Indians, and Thanksgiving. Additional activities for the month included making a Wampanoag wigwam, and making a beaded bracelet to tell the story of Thanksgiving, making Pilgrims and writing stories about them. The students also built the Mayflower ship and tested it to see if it floats or sinks. Lastly, we made pumpkin pie in a cup, and brought in a Thankful bag with one item they are thankful for inside of it. They even conducted a "hopping corn" experiment! It has been a great month filled with learning and fun!
Second grade celebrated Thanksgiving week with practicing and performing two Thanksgiving plays for kindergarten. They performed Squanto Helps the Piligrims and Arthur’s Thanksgiving. They were able to practice their reading fluency and expression. It was a fun and challenging way to practice reading skills learned in second grade. Gobble, gobble!!!
DeKalb County Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Literacy program, with the help of area sponsors, has once again donated a collection of books to Haskin School in celebration of agriculture. Look for these new titles in our school library. Our 2017 Book Sponsors gathered with second graders for a photo opportunity with the new books. Agriculture is amazing!
Off to the New World
Third graders at Haskin are learning about the Pilgrims. The simulation takes the students across the Atlantic Ocean in their “ship,” and then students learn what the Pilgrims had to do to survive their first year in the New World.
