Monday Minute
March 17, 2020
We're All in This Together
Some schools are doing packets, some eLearning, some are actually on spring break, some are still planning for an undetermined amount of time off school. We will be keeping and updating a list of resources on a special page on our website, and will continue to post things on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Some are concerned about students lacking internet access, some are accessing Google Classroom on their Wii, Xbox, or Playstations, some are sharing devices with parents working at home, and there are parents still trying to figure out Newsela.
There may not be a "regular" Monday Minute for a while, but we would like to share your successes. If you find something to be effective or inspirational during this time, send it to us, and we'll share it!
Let's Start with Some Inspiration!
What about Our Social Emotional Learning? Try Kindness
CharacterStrong has put together some cool resources including
- A Digital 30 Day Kindness Journal with ideas of ways students can practice kindness from home
- They will be having speakers do "Virtual Assemblies" that kids can watch Online (probably good for secondary students)
- Strong character videos with discussion questions for K-12
- They will also be hosting a free, virtual "Whole Child Summit" with 30 speakers for your staff, including well-known keynotes such as Angela Duckworth, Michele Borba, Dr. Danny Steele and more
You can sign up for their free resources here http://characterstrong.com/freeresources (and they gave me permission to use their graphic)
Professional Development Opportunities
- Webinars to earn PGPs
- Grants and awards that are available.
- Possible summer opportunities
- Writing an article for our newsletter, or a proposal for the AMLE Conference
AMLE Collaboration Grant
The Association for Middle Level Education Foundation Fund is awarding two $3,000 Collaboration Mini-Grants in 2020 to middle school educators who have taken leadership roles in developing collaborative projects both within and outside of schools. Recipients of this grant will receive funds to enhance an existing collaborative program or to institute a proposed program. Recipients will be recognized at the AMLE Annual Conference and must present about their collaborative project at a concurrent session. Each grant winner will receive one complimentary conference registration and up to $1000 of the award funds can be used to defray the expense of attending the AMLE conference.
Any professional member or school that has been an AMLE member for 12 months or more may apply. To download the application and view submission criteria, visit amle.org/collaboration.
MORE HELP FROM AMLE: There is a special page on their website for "Supporting Middle Level Educators through COVID-19" This includes learning resources, advisory-type activities, ways to connect with others, and a place to share your ideas.
And, don't forget the special offer to join IMLEA &AMLE. Find the details here, or on our IMLEA webpage. If you have already joined just one of the organizations, your additional membership fee will be pro-rated; you are not required to join both, but will see the advantages to doing so. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Shirley Wright. We'll check on the deadline.

Resources for Online/Remote Learning
One resource that is being maintained is "Amazing Educational Resources" I have pulled some sites that I thought applied to middle school and posted them on the page on our website.
And, for PE, this is one of the most fun sites I've found. You can't help but dance!
Science Help from Purdue
The Purdue University College of Science K-12 Outreach team is developing an eLearning page on the College of Science K-12 Outreach website, http://bit.ly/PUelearning. Our eLearning page will soon include resources such as virtual tours of labs here on the Purdue University campus as well as guided worksheets that are being created to supplement various episodes of the Superheroes of Science podcast. Our podcast, Superheroes of Science, is available on all podcast platforms, as well as our newly created YouTube channel (http://bit.ly/SOS_UTube).
Additionally, we are planning to make short (5-10 minute) videos to help explain science content for K-12 students. We will post them to the Superheroes of Science YouTube channel. Please let us know what content would be most useful for you and your students by tweeting us @PurdueSOS or sending us an email (k12science@purdue.edu).
Thank you and if there are other ways the Purdue University College of Science K-12 Outreach team could help you with your distance learning needs, please let us know. You may also contact Sarah Nern
