OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - April 8-12, 2019
High School Students Learn the Dangers of Underaged Drinking
Students at Beddingfield, Fike, Hunt, WAAT and WECA learned about the dangers of underaged drinking this week from a couple who have spent the past 18 years nursing their son back to health. Josh Bennett was in a car accident in 2001 at the age of 18 because he was drinking and driving. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to relearn everything with the support of his parents, Peggy and Nick. The family travels across the state giving presentations to high school students with the hope of encouraging young people not to make the same mistake Josh did. One of the most powerful moments of the presentation, aside from when Peggy introduced Josh and he walked toward her with the support of a cane, is when Peggy asked Josh if he would feel good if he could save one life. He responded as clearly as he could, “I want to save them all.” Shout Out! to the Wilson County ABC Board for partnering with WCS to bring the Bennetts into our high schools.
Athletic Inclusion
Shout Out! to Max, a Fike HS student with disabilities, for his accomplishments as a part of the school's track and field team. Shout Out! as well to Coach Sonny West for his leadership and for providing Max with this opportunity. Great coverage in Monday's edition of The Wilson Times.

Carnival Fun
Shout Out! to students in the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy at the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology for organizing a carnival at Barnes ES on April 5. The Barnes students had a blast spending time with older students and enjoyed food, prizes and games. We are grateful to Chick-fil-A for funding this amazing program in our high schools.
Future Fridays
"Shout Out! to Detective Battle and Detective McGriff with the Wilson Police Department for speaking to eighth-graders at Forest Hills MS about careers in law enforcement and the various camps and mentoring programs offered by the department. Their presentation on April 6 was the first in our school's Future Fridays series where local leaders are speaking to students about community resources, healthcare options, college requirements and career paths." - From Resource Teacher Tiphanie Wells
STEM Summit
Shout Out! to Alan, William and Leah, seniors at Hunt HS, and Hunt Science Teacher William Edwards for their participation in the North Carolina STEMEast Alliance "State of the Region" and STEMEast E2 Summit held in Greenville on April 4. The summit provided an opportunity for business leaders, educators and students to come together to discuss the role of STEM in our economy. The students presented a project from their AP Biology class on using alternative methods, such as Aquaponics, to grow fresh produce in areas of the world where traditional agricultural practices are less than ideal.

Hunt Optimists
Hunt HS wanted to Shout Out! Amy, one of its juniors, for her selection as Hunt's representative in the Golden Circle Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. Amy and several of her classmates - Madison, Darnell and Yasmine, all wrote and delivered speeches on the contest's topic - Is there a fine line between optimism and reality? They all did a wonderful job. Amy will advance to the district competition on April 16.

Smart Cookies
Superintendent Dr. Mills had a great time celebrating Wells ES Teacher of the Year Tamara Harris and her second-grade class of Smart Cookies on April 2! Dr. Mills read a positive statement about each student, gave each of them a certificate and shared with them why their teacher is so special. They all enjoyed cookies provided by Smart Cookies partner - Chick-fil-A.
Engineering Day
For the past several years, Bridgestone has held a Girls in Engineering Day to combat the stereotype that engineering careers are just for men. Students visited Bridgestone on March 28 to learn about careers, meet with female engineers, participate in hands-on activities and tour the plant. Pictured are students from Hunt HS.
EMS Visits Fike
Shout Out! to Captain Hendricks and other members of Wilson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for speaking to the Fike HS Health Science students about careers in EMS. The students practiced their IV skills, placed advanced airways and learned how to place intraosseous needles.
