Week of October 3

Hello STEM Families!

Welcome to this week's edition of the STEM Weekly Stream. October is a busy month, and there are many events and activities coming up to be aware of. The After-School Program starts this week - information on programming and how to sign up is below. Also included is information on how to check Interim Grades through Home Access Center. As always, make sure to check the STEM Calendar for upcoming events, including Spirit Week & Homecoming.

After School Program

Opening Week of the After School Program

The After School Program at STEM and throughout CUSD begins this week. We encourage as many students as possible to join and take advantage of the academic and extra-curricular offerings.

Each day, students who stay After School will have the opportunity to receive targeted assistance in their academic classes. Over the years, we have seen many students benefit from the extra support provided daily.

Additionally, there will be a number of clubs and activities available to students as well. These extra-curriculars allow students to gain valuable learning experiences while having fun and building relationships with their peers.

After School Programs

The following programs are currently offered in the After School Program, and we hope to add more as the year progresses:

  • Reading Olympics
  • Gymnastics
  • Drama
  • Robotics Team
  • Physical Fitness
  • Choral Group
  • Hi-Q Team
  • School Newspaper
  • Art Workshop

Additionally, daily tutoring is available in Math, ELA and Science, as well as College & Career Planning.

Attendance Reminder

Please remember that All Students Must Arrive by 7:45 each morning. We appreciate those families who have rearranged their schedules to ensure their students arrive on time. Your efforts to get your students here on time will be very beneficial to their success!

Wednesday, October 12

SAT and PSAT testing will take place on Wednesday, October 12. These exams will begin at 8:00 AM and continue for the duration of the morning. Students taking the exams are:

12th Grade: SAT

10th-11th Grades: PSAT

7th-9th Grades: Regularly Scheduled Classes

The PSAT exam provides students with a preview and baseline in order to prepare for the SAT. PSAT scores are not considered by colleges for admission, however taking the test is an important step in preparation for the SAT which they will take later.

Students also complete an extensive college and career interest survey along with the PSAT. Their responses are delivered to post-secondary schools and colleges that offer programming aligned with student interests. We encourage students to complete this survey thoughtfully. Students and families can expect to begin receiving information from colleges shortly after the PSAT is completed.

Be On Time

It is critical that students are on-time and present on October 12.

For Seniors, this will be the only SAT School Day prior to completing their college applications. If they miss, or arrive too late to begin the exam, they will need to schedule the SAT on their own.

For Sophomores and Juniors, this is the on PSAT administration date of the year. Missing this exam will prevent students from being able to take this important test this year.

First Interim Reports

The first Interim Reports have been posted to Home Access Center. Students received a "Pass" or "Fail" grade in each of their courses.

Please see below if you have not yet signed up for Home Access Center. Printed copies of Interim Reports can be requested by calling the office at 610-447-3650.

Home Access Center

The Home Access Center (HAC) allows families to view their students' grades and attendance in real time. By logging into the HAC, you can stay up to date on your student's progress and know immediately if they miss class or assignments.

If you do not have your HAC set up yet, email Ms. Misha Memon ( She will reply with your username, password and a link to the log in page.

We encourage All Students and Families to check HAC every day!

9th Grade Failure Letters

Now that the first Interim grades have been issued, we have found a number of 9th Grade students are not meeting expectations in their classes. This is a trend we see year after year, as students struggle to adjust to the increased work and rigor of their high school classes.

We must work with families of students who are struggling to ensure they get on a path to improvement quickly. Families of all 9th Grade students who received at least ONE Failing grade on their Interims will receive a letter this week to be signed and returned.

Included in the letter will be options to assist your student in improving their grades. The first step is to involve them in the After-School Program where they can receive extra tutoring and have time to complete missing assignments. Please be on the lookout for a letter if you have 9th Graders, and have conversations with your students about their grades and classes.

College & Career Workshop: Wednesday, September 28

This past Wednesday, we held our first monthly College & Career Workshop. Our Seniors got a head start on their post-secondary plans by initiating the Common App, as well as updating their Naviance profiles.

Each month, Seniors will be provided a morning during which they can fully concentrate on completing important tasks in preparation for their transition after graduation.

Voter Registration

During the College & Career Workshop, we also provided eligible Seniors an opportunity to register to vote. We have an important election coming up on November 8, and it's important our students understand the importance of exercising their right to vote. Many thanks to the New Pennsylvania Project for providing volunteers to register our students.

To all our families, if you are not yet registered to vote on November 8, please use the link below!
