Alexander the Great-His family

  • His father was Philip II, king of Macedonia
  • His mother was Olympias of Epirus
  • Alexander was born on 20 or 21 July 356 B.C. in Pella, Macedonia
  • He died on 10 or 11 June 323 B.C. aged 32
  • His wife was Roxanne, from Statira, Persia, now North Afganistan.
  • They got married in 327 B.C.
  • Their son Alexander IV was born after the death of Alexander the Great

Alexander died in Babylon.

Ptolemy placed Alexander's body in Memphis and later on in Alexandria's communal mausoleum. By 274 BC Alexander was already entombed in Alexandria. In the Roman era Alexander's body was stolen and no one knows where it lies now.

His conquests

Alexander the Great started a campaign to stop the Persians. All the towns of Greece gave soldiers. Only Spartans didn’t give soldiers because they wanted to lead the campaign. Here are the most important battles:

1. Place:Granikos river

Date:334 B.C.

Persians had a lot of soldiers, mostly archers. Alexander the Great eliminated them and he continued the campaign.

2. Place: Issos

Date:333 B.C.

Alexander the Great was changing his soldiers’ position and movement according to the terrain. Darius, king of the Persians send soldiers in the river. He also put wooden barricade. It was a cruel battle and a lot of soldiers died, but in the end Alexander again scared Darius and his soldiers. He won again. He went to Egypt to save the Egyptians from the Persians. When he took back Egyptian towns Egyptians welcomed him as a pharaoh. Alexander built a big town in Egypt named Alexadria. He continued the campaign and moved to Asia.

3. Place:Gaugamela

Date: 331 B.C

Darius was very disappointed. He said himself that he must kill Alexander immediately because half of Persia had been conquered by Macedonians. Alexander found Darius. He was ready to attack, but his general, Parmenion said that the Persian army was huge and that they had a lot of time to think of a clever plan to attach Darius. This battle was a hard battle for Alexander's army. Alexander almost killed Darius but he escaped and ordered retreat.

4. Place: Persian Gate

Date:330 B.C.

At this battle Alexander attacked on a town but lost a lot of soldiers as the army walked into an ambush. Then a Persian captive showed a passing to the back of the castle and beat the Persians.

These were the basic battles. After this Alexander tried to conquer India , but he was severely injured and he died while returning to Macedonia. He was 31 years old. What happened Darius? He was murdered!
