Welcome Back from Principal Groat

As we begin the 21-22 school year we would like to welcome all students back to school for in person learning. We missed you! We are looking forward to an awesome school year full of learning and fun. The district has established Covid-19 safety protocols which you can find here:

Back to School 2021 & COVID-19 | The Syracuse City School District | Syracuse, NY ( If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

That link will also provide information on the Covid-19 pool testing for students and staff that will be conducted in the buildings. The Screening Consent Form for your child can be found here: Clarifi COVID-19 (

We will start out testing students and staff every Wednesday for those who register for the COVID pool testing (starting on Wednesday, September 15).

Talking Points

SCSD uses the Talking Points texting app for Parent/School communications. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Talking Points will connect to the primary phone number in your child's SchoolTool account. If you wish to use a different number or add additional numbers please contact your child's teacher or the main office.

Birthday Celebrations

We love to celebrate student birthdays! This year we are unable to have food treats for birthday celebrations. Please consider sending in small toys, pencils, erasers or other non-food treats with your child to share their birthday celebrations with their classmates.

New Staff

Salem Hyde is happy to welcome several new staff members to the building this year. We will be getting to know them in the first few newsletters.

Classroom Set-Up & Spacing

Unfortunately due to COVID we have not been able to have our families see the classrooms for themselves. What we can do is show a picture of what a classroom looks like.

Below is a picture of one of our sixth grade classrooms (Ms. Burton's class) set up with desk barriers and students with 3 feet spacing from one another.
