We will start out testing students and staff every Wednesday for those who register for the COVID pool testing (starting on Wednesday, September 15).

New Staff

Welcome (Back) Renee Valerino (6th Grade Special Education)
Ms. Valerino went to college at Syracuse University. Once she graduated she worked Dr. King for 16 years in multiple grade levels. She came to Salem and worked in 5th grade for a year and then worked at Frazer for 5th grade for two years. She is so excited to be back at Salem this year.

Welcome Marlise Burton (6th Gr ELA)
This year is Mrs. Burton's 11th year teaching 6th grade with the Syracuse City Schools. She taught before at Blodgett Middle School and Lincoln Middle School. She graduated from Henninger High School in 2006 and attended SUNY Brockport for her undergraduate degree and then Le Moyne College for her Master's degree.

Welcome Catherine Knowlton (6th Gr Social Studies & Science)
Ms. Knowlton moved to the Syracuse area after teaching elementary and middle school for three years in Florida. She is excited for a new beginning at Salem Hyde as the 6th grade social studies teacher. She is hoping to make her room an inviting space that encourages students to feel comfortable and excited to learn about ancient history!

Welcome Bernadette Rushing (2nd Gr Teacher)
Ms. Rushing has been in the district nearly 7 years. She worked her way through her Master's Degree using the District's Career Ladder program. She is finishing up her NYS Certification as she teaches second grade this year. She is truly excited to be here and see her students everyday!

Classroom Set-Up & Spacing
Unfortunately due to COVID we have not been able to have our families see the classrooms for themselves. What we can do is show a picture of what a classroom looks like.
Below is a picture of one of our sixth grade classrooms (Ms. Burton's class) set up with desk barriers and students with 3 feet spacing from one another.

After-School Program
The after-school program starts on MONDAY, OCTOBER 18th and runs 5 days a week from 3:15-5:45 pm. Applications were mailed home and also sent home with students this week (week of 9/13). Please fill those out and send back to school as soon as possible so your child can start the program with a bus.
