What's happening in January, February, and March 2019?
January Events and News
- CIMS Park and Play Yard Ribbon Cutting is on January 30th! We are excited to get to open our new play area!
2:30– 3:30—Playground Ribbon Cutting
- 1st Semester awards are all on January 30th.
8:45-9:30 AM—4th grade awards assembly
9:45-10:30—5th grade awards assembly
10:45-11:30—8th grade awards assembly
12:30-1:15—6th Grade awards assembly
1:15-2:00—7th grade awards assembly
- Week of January 28th-31st is the Great Kindness Challenge and we want all families to participate!
- January 29th from 5:30-7 is PTO's 1st annual Art Night.
February Events and News
- MYP Valentine's Dance is February 14th from 4:30-6
- February 14th is also the NJHS Pink Out! Where students can wear jeans and a pink shirt to support breast cancer research for NJHS. This yea'rs Pink Out! is in honor of Dan Lujan who sponsored NJHS for many years and who's service and kind nature inspired us all to take action.
- Talent Show is February 21st from 6-7:30

The Great Kindness Challenge!
The Great Kindness Challenge is the week of January 28th-31st. We want all families to participate. Your students will be participating through school with spirit days, student checklists, and other activities, but you can get your family involved too! Pick up or have your student pick up a family version of the Great Kindness Challenge Checklist from the office and complete the challenge together! Students can submit their completed checklists into the office on Monday February 4th for student recognition.This week can be inspiration for all of us to choose kind all year round.
Current Units of Inquiry
Language and Literature
Concepts: Aesthetics, genre, and setting
Statement of Inquiry: The setting in various genres allows us to learn about and appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the world.
Inquiry Questions: Who are notable world literature authors and what are their noteworthy works? What impact does the setting have in a piece of text or in a book? How can a reader learn to appreciate world perspectives?
Summative Assessment: Students will select a piece of writing from another country and write a section of that story in play format. Setting will be a highlighted element in the play.
Spanish
Concepts: Connections, message, and word choice
Statement of Inquiry: How we feel and where we are is interconnected with our orientation in space and time.
Inquiry Questions: What is the connection between how we feel to where we are? How can I learn about myself based on my attitude when I am in certain situations? Does my perspective in certain situations determine my attitude?
Individuals and Societies
Title: America The Great.
Concepts: Culture and identity
Statement of Inquiry: Culture is the development and expression of identity and diversity.
Inquiry Questions: Where did the immigrants come from? What aspects of their culture did they bring with them? In what ways would our culture and values be different if the immigrants came at a different time or place? Should we allow immigration to continue to change our culture? Is America culturally more like a salad or a soup?
Science
Title: Atoms and the Periodic Table
Concepts: Connections, interaction, and patterns
Statement of Inquiry: Identities can be found using connections found between interactions and patterns.
Inquiry Questions: How is the periodic table laid out?
Summative Assessment: Students will develop a logical argument to support your opinion about the relative density of objects.
Math
Title: Extending the Number System
Concepts: Logic, models, and representation
Statement of Inquiry: Systems, models, and methods are used to represent numbers logically.
Inquiry Questions: What is the process to find a value for a variable? How can you identify the parts of an expression using mathematical terms? How is it helpful to write numbers in different ways?
Summative Assessment: Chapter test
Drama
Title: Who am I?
Concepts: Identity, interpretation, and presentation
Statement of Inquiry: Belief systems uncover interpretation and presentation of identity.
Inquiry Questions:How do belief systems effect identity? How does our identity relate to our perspective, based on their belief system? Do your belief systems effect your perspective and identity?
Summative Assessment: Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, beliefs and values. Students will then compose and perform an original work that defines the connection of culture/beliefs to expression and interpretation. Students will find a scripted piece and use a form of artistic expression to support their interpretation of the meaning both literal and abstract thought.
Instrumental Music
Title: Universal Code
Concepts: Communication, composition, and structure
Statement of Inquiry: Creating universal symbols can make individuals with different social histories better informed
Inquiry Questions: What symbols are universal? How do symbols help us to communicate in our daily lives? What is the best way to communicate?
Design
Title: Tracking Our Progress
Concepts: Development, form, and function
Statement of Inquiry: The functional form of a product can lead to personal development and growth.
Inquiry Questions: What is the function of a spreadsheet? How can you format a google spreadsheet to track your progress on multiple things at the same time? What is the importance of tracking our progress to our own personal growth?
Summative Assessment: Students are given the task of creating their own configuration within google spreadsheets to allow them to monitor their own work and therefore help them develop their self management skills.
PHE
Concepts: Relationships, adaptation, and refinement
Statement of Inquiry: Students will adapt and refine their personalities in order to take a role and build relationships with their peers when creating their dances.
Inquiry Questions:Can you make a difference in your community having better knowledge of dance? How long has dance been part of our society and how does it relate to physical education? How has rhythm and movement change throughout the decades of music?
Summative Assessment: When creating a line dance, the student will develop relationships while adapting and refining their personality. They will cooperate and understand the identity beliefs and values of their peers in their group.
2018-19 Yearbook Sales
Don't forget to order your student's yearbook by Jan. 31st for Early Bird pricing. The price goes up after January 31st and online sales close on April 6th. Yearbook sales are limited on the day of distribution and are not guaranteed. Yearbooks are sold through online sales only, no money can be accepted in the office.
