VOL. 7 - Week of September 30, 2019
EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS!
Why I Give:
We are the proud parents of three sons: Julián, a 7th grader at CCMS, and Camilo and Rubén, twins in the 5th grade at El Marino Elementary. We moved to Culver City six years ago because of the schools, and we haven’t been disappointed. Overall, the sense of community and support has been truly impressive and now, with our eldest at the Middle School, we have witnessed firsthand the efforts made by teachers and staff alike to make CCMS a safe and more inclusive setting in which all students can thrive.
That said, we must acknowledge that the work of the PTSA and Panther Partners plays a major role in facilitating the Middle School experience for our children on so many levels. So much of the work is behind the scenes, but contributes to the greater good of the school and ultimately our Culver City community. As a working parent, I’m also aware that it’s a struggle to find time to volunteer, but this year’s fundraising campaign for a one-time donation makes it easy to make a difference. Our goal is to achieve 100% participation, no matter the amount donated. So be as generous as you can when you write that check or donate online, and be a part of making our children’s years at CCMS a vital and inspirational experience that will ensure their academic and personal success.
~Ángel Cienfuegos and Andrea Parra
We have just 34 days remaining in the annual giving 100 campaign and we have raised $34,300 with about 20% of families participating! Imagine what we could do if EVERYONE donated whatever they’re able to. Let’s go Panther Parents - we can do this! Click here to donate today to help us get to 100%.
Thank you to everyone who’s already donated to the 100 Campaign!
Thank you so much for supporting CCMS!
~Your Fellow Panther Parents

Volunteers needed for the Backpacks for Kids Program
The Backpacks for Kids program provides backpacks filled with food and snacks for children to take home over the weekend to ensure that every child in our district can eat on the weekends. This programs runs out of CCMS with volunteers that pick up and drop off backpacks to each school in our district. We are looking for volunteers to be in front of CCMS to collect empty backpacks on Wednesdays, 8:30-9:30am, and to help load filled backpacks in to cars in front of CCMS on Fridays, 8:30-9:30am. Please email Connie at cslwong123@gmail.com if you can help. Thanks!
Copy Room Volunteers Needed
Are you looking for a way to get involved at CCMS? Do you like helping out your kids’ teachers? If so the PTSA is looking for volunteers to work in the copy room this year. This is a great way to get to know the campus and the staff. You must be a cleared volunteer and be willing to commit to a hour or two once a week or every other week.
Please contact Allison Herbst (asherbst@me.com) if you are interested.
Help CCMS by volunteering in the CCMS Student Store!
The CCMS Student Store is an extremely important source of revenue for the PTSA - and a great way to get a peek into what's happening with CCMS students during their lunch hour and right after school! So why not volunteer to work the CCMS Student Store?! It's open daily for students to buy snacks at lunch and after school, PE clothes, and Spirit Wear and we need lots of parents to staff it. Please take advantage of this chance to be on campus and volunteer today! Sign up here! Please make sure to check your Volunteer Clearance with the office prior to signing up to help.

To our families celebrating Rosh HaShanah: May you have a good and sweet new year.
Helping Your Student Sign up for PAWs
At CCMS, we have a 30 minute intervention period imbedded into our schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For these periods, students are able to sign up to receive additional support or enrichment in their classes. This year, we are using a platform called Enriching Students (app.enrichingstudents.com) to sign up for PAWs sessions. The website can also be accessed through our school website (ccms.ccusd.org), under Students – PAWs Enriching Students.
All of the teachers have PAWs courses offered and they will input what their particular PAWs is covering (i.e. Takahashi- JLA 6th grade makeup work), so students can make the best decision for their individual situation. We encourage students to look at their teacher’s PAWs courses first, but if none are applicable, some of the teachers offer alternatives, such as GATE enrichment or silent study hall.
This year, we have two schedule strands, one for 6th graders and one for 7th/8th graders. We would like for students to check to make sure that the courses they are signing up for are offered for their grade level.
Teachers are giving students 5 minutes during 1st period class every Monday to sign in and sign up for PAWs classes. However, the website can be accessed anywhere (there’s even an app for Enriching Students!), so we encourage students to sign up even before 1st period each week. Students will be able to sign up for classes up to two weeks in advance.
Here is a link to the PAWs sign up tutorial if you want to see how to schedule.

Pay Attention to Attendance:
Keep Your Child On Track in Middle and High School
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
