About South Valley
Here at South Valley, the teachers expect you to do your best in their classes. If you need any help or you're not understanding a concept in class, the teachers will gladly help you. The teachers also let you talk with people in the class on a day to day basis but they still expect you to be able get all of your work done. Students love getting to know each other and becoming better friends with one another. "Everyone is so welcoming,," Chloe says.
Eagle News
Every Friday, during advisory, teachers show the eagle news that the 8th grade broadcasting classes did for that week. You get to learn things that are happening around the school and become a part of the school's environment through after school sports and clubs. You can also find out when intramurals are.
Final Fridays
During the last Friday of each month, Flight Crew members come around to each classroom during a particular hour of the day to pass out treats. Sometimes you get candy, chips, or soda to choose from. "It's so nice to have a little snack break during class," says Chloe, a student at South Valley.
Student Led Assemblies
Assemblies are scheduled sometime every month or two. Students who are a part of flight add special games to play during the assembly so that way students are not sitting the entire time listening to someone talk. "I actually enjoy the assemblies at South Valley thanks to the games," says a student at South Valley. You learn about the sports around South Valley Middle School and learn about what clubs you can join.
Sports and Clubs
6th graders are the only people who cannot play in any sports until they are in 7th and 8th grade. 7th graders can only participate in cross country and wrestling as well as 8th graders. Only 8th graders can be part of the volleyball, basketball, football, and track teams. 8th grade girls also have the chance to do cheer leading. They show up at each game to cheer on their team and they get the crowd pumped. Every grade can come to the sporting events and cheer their eagles on. "At the end of each teams season, they compete for the battle for the paddle in the Liberty School District and it's so much fun," Chloe says.
Most Used Websites
The most used websites that SVMS uses is google classroom. You do assignments that teachers assign you and turn them in using google classroom. Powerschool is a website that teachers put all your grades into and you can check what each grade you have for each class you take. Kahoot helps you learn new things in class by playing a little competitive game. You also use Gmail to send emails to parents about your grades and ask teachers what they are doing in class that day if you won't be there.
Dress Codes
"No spaghetti strap tank tops are allowed," says the principal at SVMS. If you want to wear tank tops to school, then they have to be more than 3 fingers wide on the straps. Shorts must be longer than fingertips when you put your arms at your sides. You cannot wear crop tops or show any stomach skin either.
Fundraisers
You can pay to play or watch the dodge ball tournament that happens every year in the winter during second semester. "All grade levels compete against each other to try to make it to the championship," a student says. South Valley has also done a color run to help raise money. You walk or run around the campus while wearing a white shirt that the school gives you and get colors sprayed on you. At the end there is also concessions for you to buy snacks or a drink. You also have a chance to sell major saver cards for cool prizes. It is suggested to sell major saver cards to trusted people you know as well as who your parents know and trust. The Major saver cards have good deals on popular food places throughout the metro. There are also the fall and spring mixers where you can do activities, hang out with friends or eat food, but you do have to stay after school and pay to go.
Passing Periods
You have 4 minutes to pass between each class. This gives you enough time to go to your locker if you need something for your next class or put away something from the class you just had. This also gives you enough time to go to the bathroom but if you know that you probably won't make it back in time for your next class, tell your teacher where you will be before you go.
