Pandemic-Resilient Jobs in San Diego County
AN UPDATE TO THE RESILIENT JOBS STUDY RELEASED IN AUGUST 2020.
In August 2020, the San Diego-Imperial Center of Excellence for Labor Market Research (COE) released Resilient Jobs, a study that analyzed jobs that appeared resilient during two economic crises, the Great Recession (2007-2009) and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic (March-June 2020). Since then, more online job postings data became available, which is the focus of this update.
The San Diego-Imperial COE reviewed approximately 370,000 online job postings over 10 months to identify "pandemic-resilient jobs." For this study, “pandemic-resilient jobs” are defined as jobs with the greatest number of online job postings per month between March and December 2020. The following summarizes highlights from the update.
NEW PANDEMIC-RESILIENT JOBS
Between March and December 2020, 74 occupations from the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system made the monthly top 50 jobs list at least once. The update adds 8 new pandemic-resilient jobs to the 66 pandemic-resilient jobs identified in the August 2020 study:
- Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics
- Financial Analysts
- Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technicians
- Nursing Assistants
- Preschool Teachers, Except Special Education
- Real Estate Sales Agents
- Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Technical and Scientific Products
- Teachers and Instructors, All Other, Except Substitute Teachers
CONSISTENTLY IN-DEMAND, PANDEMIC-RESILIENT JOBS
30 occupations consistently made the top 50 jobs list each month in the 10 months analyzed. Except for two occupations, these top 30 pandemic-resilient jobs in San Diego County also appeared in the top pandemic-resilient jobs list for the United States:
- Accountants and Auditors*
- Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Auditing Clerks
- Combined Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Including Fast Food
- Computer Occupations, All Other*
- Computer User Support Specialists*
- Customer Service Representatives
- Engineering Technicians, Except Drafters, All Other
- Financial Managers*
- First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers
- General and Operations Managers*
- Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers
- Human Resources Specialists
- Janitors and Cleaners, Except Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners
- Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand
- Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses*
- Maintenance and Repair Workers, General*
- Management Analysts*
- Managers, All Other*
- Marketing Managers
- Medical and Health Services Managers*
- Operations Research Analysts
- Personal Care Aides
- Registered Nurses*
- Retail Salespersons
- Sales Managers*
- Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products
- Secretaries and Administrative Assistants, Except Legal, Medical, and Executive*
- Security Guards
- Software Developers, Applications*
- Stock Clerks and Order Fillers
*middle-skill job or job trainable by community colleges*
SAN DIEGO VS NATIONAL PANDEMIC-RESILIENT JOBS
26 occupations differed between San Diego County's pandemic-resilient jobs list and the national pandemic-resilient jobs list. The following chart illustrates which occupations appeared in the top 50 jobs list at least one month in San Diego County, but not in the United States, and vice versa.
The San Diego-Imperial COE encourages stakeholders to use this study as a resource for meaningful discussions. This labor market information is intended to help the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges with program development and strategic planning as they assess priorities during this difficult time. It is important to note that this study does not compare labor market demand with supply. If the region’s community colleges decide to create a new program for the occupations identified in this study, then the San Diego-Imperial COE recommends completing a supply gap analysis, which compares demand with supply.
