How Can I Encourage my Child to Read at Home?

Brett Berkman, Literacy Coach

Greetings Dunning Pandas! It’s been great to see everyone back at school and hear about your summer adventures. Now that fall is in full swing, I know you are all very busy with school and after-school activities. Here are a few tips that can help you keep your child reading at home!

  1. Create a book nook or a reading space: My favorite place to read is a blue chair in my living room. It fits me perfectly and, as a bonus, in the afternoons the sun hits it just right! Where do you like to read? Where does your child like to read? Can you help them create a special reading space with a comfy pillow or bean bag? How about giving them a booklight? Children love to read in the dark with a flashlight or booklight! I’d love to see your bookspaces! Send me a picture at

Take advantage of the library: There are so many great events at Framingham’s public library. Here is a link to the McAuliffe page. At McAuliffe there is a fall festival on October 26th and a Halloween Craft on October 31st. You could also add a library visit to your weekly schedule. Maybe you can squeeze in a visit in between activities or plan to go one specific day/week. You could also have your child meet a friend at the library for a play date. Send me a picture of you and your child at the library!

changing weather!!

We care about your children and want them to be happy and comfortable playing outside. As we all know, New England weather can change very quickly. One day we may enjoy warmer weather conditions only to be faced with colder weather the next day. As we move into cooler temperatures, please make sure to send your student(s) with weather appropriate clothing. Dressing in layers is the best way to embrace the elements. Also, please label everything!

care and share

The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.

Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
