Beginning this school year, the Webster Groves School District has added late start days to the school calendar.
Late start days will allow for additional time for our teachers to use data and collaboratively plan to continue to address the needs of all of our students.
The schedule for late starts is below:
Late Start Supervision Program - 7:40am-8:50am
School Day Arrival Begins - 8:50am
School Begins - 9:05am
Families who need help with student supervision on late start days can participate in a program available at each building. If you already signed up for this supervision, you should have received a confirmation email from Avery on Sunday, August 14th at 9:45am.
If you are in need of supervision for your child(ren) and have not received a confirmation email that they are in our late start supervision program, please click here and complete the form.
Members of the Avery staff will manage the Late Start Supervision Program, including instructional aides and substitute teachers. Families who participate in the morning Adventure Club Program will automatically be enrolled in the Late Start Supervision Program.

Avery Progressive Dinner
SATURDAY, SEPT. 24 5:30pm - 11:00pm
It's the biggest party of the year!
Our Progressive Dinner starts with everyone gathering at an Avery family's home to enjoy drinks and appetizers. Then we draw at random to discover where we'll enjoy dinner with a smaller group at one of our dinner hosts' homes. Finally, everyone reconvenes at our final destination for dessert!
This is a great way to get to know fellow Avery parents AND raise funds for school field trips, teacher grants, and more!
It's time for the Avery PTO Fundraising Buy-Out!
You don't want to sell cookie dough and wrapping paper to your neighbors, right? In lieu of asking your kids to hit up your friends and family, the PTO membership has elected to make fundraising simple by asking parents to contribute directly to the PTO. EVERY dollar collected through the buy-out gets distributed to classroom teachers at Avery. Teachers then use this money to cover supplies as needs arise throughout the year.
How to donate:
● Return this form and your cash or check payable to “Avery PTO” in the PTO Mailbox located in the front hall. https://mo02202299.schoolwires.net//cms/lib/MO02202299/Centricity/Domain/103/PTO%20BuyOut%20form%202022-2023.pdf
● Donate online through PayPal (pto.averyelementary@gmail.com) or Venmo (@pto-avery). Please note, when making an online donation, a processing fee will apply. Please consider increasing your donation to cover the fee so that your full donation will go to the teachers.
● Please submit all donations by October 14, 2022.
Have questions? Contact PTO President, Ingrid Deetz, at IngridDeetz@gmail.com or 312-399-1343.

A Note from Mrs. Wallace… Avery’s School Counselor
Welcome Back to School! It is awesome to see ALL Avery All-Stars with us again! Exciting topics are being discussed all over Avery! What a successful first week learning our new routines and focusing on goals for the year.
You might be wondering:
How does school counseling work in elementary school?
What is SEL or Social Emotional Learning that I keep hearing about?
Let me help answer these…
At Avery our school counseling program focuses around “Avery’s 3 Big Ideas”
1.) The Avery Way – our school motto for a positive school climate.
2.) The Zones of Regulation- our way of discussing our emotions, how to regulate them, how they affect others, and how we ask for help with our emotions.
3.) The 7 Habits of Happy Kids – 7 Social Emotional practices and life skills in order to solve problems, set and reach goals, and interact effectively with others. This year our entire school will put extra emphasis on Habit #4- Think Win –Win. This habit focuses on how to be a win-win friend and solving conflict in a win-win way through I messages, possible solutions, and compromises.
These 3 Big Ideas guide the way we address social concerns and learning that is not strictly about academics.
Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning is a way to describe any type of learning that is fostering/developing relationships, civility, interacting, creating empathy and having genuine relationships with others in our building. Social Emotional Learning sometimes looks like play, or expressing feelings around a conflict. We do activities as a school that support students’ ability to feel connected and heard in their school and community. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) does not take away from academics. SEL helps create learners that are connected and confident. As a result, focus on academics is stronger because the student is invested in their class and knows they are cared for.
I visit classrooms every month and love getting to know our students.
Students will also be introduced to Miss Urusla Kindt. Miss Kindt is a counseling intern spending two and a half days with me from the University of Missouri- St. Louis.

Birthday Treats
Beginning this school year, we will begin celebrating student birthdays differently than in the past. We will no longer be accepting outside birthday treats for your child's birthday. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but primarily due to the dietary restrictions and safety of our students.
We will continue to celebrate your child on their birthday! Some ways we do this as a whole school are including names on our T.V. monitors around the building, announcing birthdays on the morning announcements, and beginning this year having students visit the office for their very own birthday pencil.
Individual classrooms also celebrate birthdays! Teachers will be reaching out to families on the unique ways they plan to ensure your children feel special on their big day!
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you,
Hannah Peterson, Ed.D.

3rd Grade Strings Information
Dear Third Grade Parents and Guardians,
The Webster Groves School District is proud to offer
after school violin classes that are open to all third grade
students. Our goal is to introduce students to the world of
instrumental music in a way that elevates self esteem and
encourages a lifelong interest in the arts. This program is most beneficial for students who want to continue playing a string instrument through high school and possibly into their college years. The classes are free; the only cost for parents is the violin rental which is approximately $200 for the entire school year. Top Notch Violins are the company we recommend, but not required. Here is their rental information, Top Notch Rental.
This year the third grade class will meet on the days and times below. Classes will begin on Monday, September 26th for M/W Classes, September 27th for T/TH and the 30th for our overloaded Avery or Bristol class (if needed). Please verify that your child is available for both weekly class times before applying.
There are a few steps to enroll your child. On Monday, September 5th (Labor Day) beginning at 8:00 a.m., go online to 3rd Grade Strings Enrollment to register your child. Please sign up your child using this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DiHOoLjAhMJvAHRR3PjGQsHKbFINA5DeaMQ00zqkrbw/edit
Class sizes are limited to 18 children, and will be filled in the order in which your online form is received. All registering must be done on the link above; I cannot accept emailed registrations.
If you are one of the first 18 to register, you will be invited to attend our informational meeting via Zoom on Monday, September 12th at 6:30 pm. Your child is welcome and encouraged to attend as well. The link will be sent once you are entered into the program.
