Testing Season 2019 is Coming!
Dear Families,
We hope you all enjoyed a lovely spring break. It’s hard to believe that we’re already in the last quarter of the school year. As we approach the end of the year, we have a few different measures we use to provide feedback on student growth and proficiency to you, your child, and next year’s teacher. Here’s what to expect in the upcoming months:
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA):
Who: Students in grades 3-5
What: This is a test your child will take in both math and reading (and science for 5th graders only). It is a state assessment used to measure how well you child understands the grade level standards (proficiency). Your child will take this assessment on the computer. It is not timed. It is also adaptive, so depending on how your child answers a question, the next question will adapt to find an accurate level.
When: April 15-26 for math and reading. 5th grade science will be the week of May 6. Grade levels will communicate when your child’s assessment dates fall within that range.
Why: We want to know how well your child understands the grade level standards to ensure a solid foundation entering the next level.
Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP):
Who: Students in grades K-5
What: This is a test your child will take in both math and reading. It is a standardized assessment used to measure how much your child has grown from last spring to this spring (growth). Your child will take this assessment on the computer. It is not timed. It is also adaptive, so your child might encounter things they haven’t been taught yet. Your child will be encouraged to make their best guess and move on if that happens.
When: April 29-May 10. Grade levels will communicate when your child’s assessment dates fall within that range.
Why: Because we serve students who start the year across such a range of abilities, it is important to know that students are growing from where they started.
Guided Reading:
Who: Students in grades K-5
What: Students read a passage one on one with their teacher and answer questions about the passage.
When: April 29-May 23. This will happen throughout the month.
Why: We know students comprehend best when they are reading at a good level. This helps students identify good fit books and teachers provide good fit instruction.
We do our best to treat this as a celebration of learning by allowing students the opportunity to show off what they know. Your child’s teacher will share out more specifics about administration dates of these assessments. If you have any questions about any upcoming assessments, please contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Samec at 651-621-7803 or lindsey.samec@moundsviewschools.org.
