### May 13, 2016

Our highlight this week was the field trip to Downers Grove South High School to see a performance of the ‘The Jungle Book’. The entire experience was ‘awesome’ as the students would say, from beginning to end. Many students do not have the opportunity to ride a school bus on a regular basis, so riding with friends is a real treat! The performance itself was quite entertaining and engaging. We were a polite audience who enjoyed every minute of it. Thus, our free field trip was well worth it!

## Literacy

In Superkids this week we focused on ways to spell the /air/ sound using: air, airy, ear, are, erry, and ary. Additionally, we talked about connecting sentences using the word because, more work with homonyms, and spelling changes to base words. The Lasting Lesson this week was ‘Helping Out’. This brought us to a discussion on helping out at home, at school, and in the community. We try to foster this at school by having classroom helpers, and by Student Council sponsored community projects, our latest project being a fund raising effort for Cystic Fibrosis. We should be hearing the results about this next week. A big THANK YOU to all who donated!

In Cursive writing we learned the capital letters J, I, and T.

In our SUPER magazine this week there was an article on the Grand Canyon - ‘What’s so grand about the Grand Canyon?’ This is the third article in our Super magazines that we’ve read about U.S. Natural Parks, the other two being about Niagara Falls and the Sequoia National Forest. We plan to research more about these parks in the next couple of weeks and then write an opinion essay about them.

## Math

The students did quite well on their Unit 5 test - Geometry and Fractions. One day was spent re-teaching to part of the class that needed it, completing our RWE (Real World Experience), and moving on to our last unit - Arrays and Multiplication. We started the unit with Even and Odd numbers. Give your student a number and have him/her tell you if it is even or odd and why

We also started TenMarks, an online math program aligned to Common Core and State Grade Level Standards. A letter with information on accessing the program from home is in today’s Friday folder. Please be sure to read it.

## AR Winners

More and more students are making their AR goals. Yay! The students pictured below have already made their goal and are well on their way to more prizes. Please continue to encourage your child to READ each night. The quarter is moving rapidly and we want everyone to reach their goal so that they can attend the end of the year AR celebration in the gym. Dr. Scaletta always makes this a special and fun event that is not to be missed!
