Archives War

Mexican leaders were launching raids in Texas due to the Lamar administration. In 1842 General Rafael Vasquez entered Texas. He had 700 soldiers among him and attacked San Antonio, Goliad, Refugio, and Victoria. Soon after, Vasquez returned to Mexico.

Texans were scared when they found out, thinking they would attack Austin soon. President Houston ordered that the government records be withdrawn from the capital. Austin residents knew this was coming, thinking the capital would be moved back to Houston. Led by Angelina Eberly, they fired at officials who were loading documents. This was called the Archives War.

In September 1842 Mexico attacked Texas once again. General Adrian Woll and 1400 soldiers captured San Antonio.

Hundreds of Texas Rangers made their way to San Antonio. They attacked Woll’s force, several miles away from San Antonio. The Mexican troops retreated.
