Early Life
Charlotte E. Ray was an African-American woman who was born in New York City on January 13, 1850.
Making History
Ray attended Howard University School of Law where she received her law degree. After graduating from Howard University School of Law she was admitted to the District of Columbia bar where she became the first female African-American lawyer in the United States.
Personal Life
Charlotte was one of seven children and education in her family was very important. Ray was involved in the woman's suffrage movement and she joined the National Association of Colored Women. Ray died on January 4, 1911 and her accomplishments inspired others to reach their goals.
