FEBRUARY
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only Love can do that.
~ Martin Luther King Jr.
The KIBSD Spelling Bee is February 7th at 7pm!
AKTEACH is proud to send Carissa and Landon Stafford to compete against Kodiak's other schools in this years District Spelling Bee. Carissa and Landon spelled their way though dozens of words with confidence and accuracy. Join us Tuesday in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium to cheer on our skilled spellers.
Scientists in Action took us on a tour of our Solar System
We made glow-in-the-dark galaxy slime while we hopped from planet to planet learning about the stars (including our star, the sun), the atmosphere and terrain of Mars and Jupiter, how long a year is on Saturn, and lots of other cool space facts. This month we will not be meeting in person for our Scientists in Action because our epic Book Battles will be taking place at the same time but you can still participate from home with the zoom link.
Everyone had a Blast at our First Crafting Club Meeting
We made Quilted Wall Hangings in honor of Martin Luther King's Day based off of the legends of the Coded Quilts that some oral traditions claim lead freedom seekers north to safety. Our quilts featured a "code" that would accurately point anyone searching the night sky all the way north to the safety of our home, Alaska.
This Month Crafting Club will not meet.
Instead we are planning a fun craft for our Valentines Day Party.
Last Month's Instant Challenge Our Students Endeavored to Save the Polar Bears
Our 2 teams had 20 minutes to plan, design and build a floatation device to hold as many bears as possible without sinking. We learned a little bit about icebergs and the science that keeps them floating.

Colaborative Design
The Girls Went First
They fit a whopping 36 bears in their floating ice cave before it started taking on water.
Crystal Adding Bears One at a Time as We All Kept Count
We learned how surface area displaces water so the that the larger iceberg was able to hold more bears before starting to sink.
The Boys Went Second
Their raft fit 14 bears piled 2-3 deep before they started taking on water
Don't forget to send us your students portraits for the yearbook if you dont have them taken with Life Touch
...and dont forget to order your yearbook and start putting together your custom pages now.
Looking to the Future...
When should you R.S.V.P. for Activities?
We appreciate when you are able to R.S.V.P. for events but we never want you to miss out on joining us if you didn't. A quick email if you know your going gives us a general head count and helps us prepare. For Activities where we have to put together supplies we really appreciate an R.S.V.P.! We will always prepare for a few extra students but we want to make sure we have enough materials for every child who shows up.
Re-Enrollment for 2023/24 is Now Open
