Re-imagining the Star in 2016! Week of January 18-22
Hoit's Highlights Week of 1/18/2016
One Star Family,
We are off to an excellent start in 2016! Everyone is refreshed and getting back into routines that are maximizing learning time and opportunities to grow together. Our teachers engaged in some critical and valuable dialogue during our Professional Learning on Friday, January 15th focused on our school-wide behavior supports. Specifically, we spent time analyzing our current systems, practices, and beliefs and identified our next steps as a One Star Family in strengthening the social and emotional skills of our students. I look forward to problem-solving and executing those next steps and seeing growth in all of our students to help them develop into safe, responsible, and respectful adults.
Please be sure to check out the At-a-Glance weekly schedule to prepare your student for the week. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your child and they remember Martin Luther King Jr. as an individual committed to spreading peace, hope, and love. When I asked my 1st grade son how we could spread kindness in honor of MLK Jr. Day he said, “maybe I should read a book to sis.” I of course smiled with joy and at the same time asked if his daddy told him to say that-laugh out loud! If you can take a moment to share an act of kindness towards others with your child and then have them share with their teacher that would be wonderful!
As Always, Today is a Great Day to Shine Bright!

Dental Services & Screening
Dental Services:There will be a dental clinic for those of you would like your child to get dental services while at school. There will be a dental form from health partnership coming home for that. If you do not want services at school do not send the form back.
Dental Screening: On February 3rd we will be having an all school dental screening. This information, in numbers only, will be supplied to the state. It is a quick look in the mouth – no work will be done. It takes less than 30 seconds per student. There will be written information coming home about that as well. There will be an opt out form. If you don’t want your child to participate in the screening it needs to be in writing, signed by the parent, to the nurse by Feb. 1st.

Help us cheer on the latest round of students turning in "mileage" for the school's walk to Rio de Janiero! We have walked 3,725 miles - all the way to Yaviza, Panama - and are about to begin our journey into South America!!! (Find Yaviza on a map and look what happens to the road!)
Students (and families), keep up your healthy activities! All students are encouraged to help us get to Rio!

Job Openings in Food Service
Did you know that there are job openings with SMSD Food Services? You could work a few hours each day in one of our school kitchens. It’s a great way to earn some money while your student is at school.

Openings and then Food Services.
Are You a Member of the PTA?
Join PTA for just $7 per person or $12 for couples in the same household! And don't worry, by joining you are not committing to meetings and volunteering all the time. You are free to choose what you attend and volunteer for!
What does your $7 do? $3.50 goes tot he State PTA. The rest is used to help our kids! Last year our budget called for $8,000 for school field trips! We put on Family Fun nights and 2 class parties per year! And those are just a small amount of the awesome things our PTA does! So please join and help us continue to be able to fund these awesome items!
