Valentine's Parties - Friday, February 14th

Yellow Springs Elementary will hold Valentine Parties on Friday, February 14th. We thank our room parents for coordinating this event along with our classroom teachers.


Your child is welcome to exchange valentine cards with classmates as a part of the celebration. We ask that no candy/food items be attached to the card to share. Any cards with candy/food items attached will be returned. Also, please note this party is for Yellow Springs students only and siblings will not be allowed to attend.


Grade level party times:

Kindergarten 9:30 - 10:30 am

1st grade 10:00 - 11:00 am

2nd grade 9:30 - 10:30 am

3rd grade 12:15 - 1:15 pm

News from our School Counselor

It with sadness that we let you know that Mrs. Johansen, school counselor, will be taking a leave of absence starting March 1st. Mrs. Johansen’s husband has taken a work assignment in Sydney, Australia and she will be joining him. While we are sad to see Mrs. Johansen go, we are happy to know that Mrs. Laura Hanlon will be returning to Yellow Springs as the long term substitute counselor for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Mrs. Hanlon was with us in the beginning of this school year during Mrs. Johansen’s absence. We wish Mrs. Johansen well as she enjoys life down under!

Pennies for Patients is Calling All Heroes to Join our Squad!

Families, our school has decided to join with the Leukemia and Lymphona Society to take on blood cancer and our mission is to help find a cure. Our annual Pennies for Patients campaign starts on Monday February 3 and runs until February 21. Donations can be made online, or students can bring change to school. Flyers and collection boxes were sent home earlier this week.

Fifth Grade Parents - Important Middle School Information

Middle School Course Selection

5th grade students will have a presentation next week from the Monocacy guidance counselors to explain the Middle School course selection process. Students will be bringing home course catalogs and selection forms to make their choices of 6th grade classes.


Monocacy Middle School Information Night

Monocacy Middle School will be offering an informational night for incoming sixth grade families on February 19th from 6:30-8:00 PM. Please attend to gain information about your child’s journey into middle school. Snow date is 2/26.

Congratulations to our Frederick County Reflections winners!

Three Yellow Springs Eagles were recognized by the Frederick County PTA for their entries in this year's Reflections program. Their entries will now advance to the state level of the program. Way to go Eagles!

Congratulations to 4th Grade Eagle, Ava Dillman!

The Arc Maryland, in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, and the Maryland Department of Disabilities, announced their 2019-2020 “Together We’re Better” Inclusive Education Artwork Contest for elementary and middle school students to participate in. The purpose of the art contest is to raise awareness of the value and importance of diversity in schools and to celebrate our differences and abilities. Entries were judged based on the use of materials used, the level of creativity and originality exhibited and the best representation of the art contest theme.

Ava Dillman, 4th grade, chose to submit an entry into the “Together We’re Better” art contest because she was inspired by her friendships with her classmates. She feels Yellow Springs is an inclusive school that allows all students the same opportunities to learn and participate in events no matter ones’ abilities.

We are pleased to announce Ava’s entry was selected as the first place piece at the elementary level! She will be recognized for this achievement at an event in Annapolis this February attended by disability advocates, Maryland elected officials and representation from multiple organizations around the state. Her entry will be on display at a variety of public locations across Maryland from now through the summer. Congratulations Ava for all of your hard work and for believing that “Together We’re Better” at Yellow Springs!

Elementary Magnet Program

The Elementary Magnet Program Application season is now upon us! This program is designed for academically gifted students in grades 3 - 5 with superior performance in both language arts and mathematics.


Application information is now available online at www.fcps.org/academics/elemmagnetprg. The 2020-2021 Elementary Magnet Program application is for students currently in Grades 2,3, and 4. If you need assistance accessing the online application, please contact the Yellow Springs office (240)236-1700.

Camp Invention returns to YSES

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Yellow Springs Elem School is pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering grades K through 6th. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure provides lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children rotate through several hands-on activities each day while using teamwork, creative thinking and problem-solving skills to invent unique solutions to real-world challenges. The week begins on July 27, 2020 with Sheree Kastner serving as Director of the all-new 2020 program, Elevate!


Camp Invention’s activities give participants the opportunity to explore, create and build confidence as they bring their biggest ideas to life.

Local educators facilitate the program and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

Movie Night – The YSES PTA invites you to movie night, featuring Angry Birds 2! Be sure to bring some blankets to sit on. Doors open at 5:30pm, movie starts at 6pm. Each student will receive a small bag of popcorn and a juice pouch, but families are welcome to bring additional snacks.


Spirit Night at Plaza Mexico – Take a break from cooking and have dinner at YSES family owned Plaza Mexico for Spirit Night! Located in Worman’s Mill (2481 Merchant Square), Plaza Mexico is donating 15% of your check on Tuesday February 11th from 5-9:30pm. Just mention the fundraiser to your server.


Shadowland Fundraiser – Suit up and join us for the adventure of a lifetime! The YSES PTA is hosting a fundraiser at Shadowland, in the FSK Mall (5500 Buckeystown Pike). Grab some friends and head to Shadowland on February 27th anytime after school till 9pm. Mention the fundraiser and we’ll receive $2/player. Hope to see you there!


The fifth grade will be participating in a Joe Corbi’s fundraiser in the month of March. Details coming soon!
