Stanwood Middle School
Family Update - August 25th, 2020
Good evening Stanwood Middle School Families!
This is our second family update of the year. I want to start by making sure everyone shares this information with others in our Stanwood Middle School community. Many parents and guardians have emailed me in the past week letting me know they have not received our communications. It seems many email systems put our communications in the spam or junk folder. So, we are asking you (especially families of new 6th graders) to share this communication with all your friends and neighbors!
We put the link on our website, we have our PTO Facebook page use it, and we forward it to anyone who makes us aware they are not receiving them, but we could use your help too! So spread the word so we can all be prepared for the beginning of the year!
As I mentioned last week, we can't wait to get started on this new adventure and appreciate everyone's patience as we navigate these new times! Some of the information included in this communication was in last week's email, but it is very important for our families so we have it here as well.
We are handing out chromebooks to students each day between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Please call 360.629.1350 and we will bring one out to you at the front of the school.
A few teachers will be handing out kits, supplies or instruments students will need for the beginning of school. Those teachers will communicate with students through their email and those kits or supplies will be available between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the days given by the teacher.
We are currently out of hotspots, but the District has ordered more. We will let you know when they arrive.
If your student needs any supplies for school please call and we will have those available.
We are working with the company we contract with for school pictures and at this time we will be having our picture day later this year. We will keep you updated.
Stanwood Middle School will be releasing our Open House video and introduction for all students on the evening of Tuesday, September 1st. All families will receive the email and it will be posted on our website.
Please do not hesitate to call the school for any information, 360.629.1350.

A message from our counselor Mrs. Fox!
This is going to be a great school year, even if it’s an unusual one! I am looking forward to joining your classes from time to time, setting up some great opportunities online and in groups, and meeting with you individually to support your success. There are hard parts of this unusual time, and there are also opportunities for unique growth. We will get through this together, as kind humans and with strong SMS Spartan Spirit!
I want to make sure that all students and families know how to contact me — and some of the ways I can support your success.
-The easiest and quickest way to contact me right now is by email at KFox@stanwood.wednet.edu. I do my best to reply to emails within 24-48 hours during the week. You can also call or text me on my work cell phone at 360-421-2556.
-If you would like to schedule a meeting, we can meet either online via Google Meet, or by telephone. Both are great options! If you would like to meet, please email me your preferred days and times to meet during the school days, and I will reply to schedule our meeting.
-I support students in many ways, including with time management, study skills, social emotional learning, peer conflict, and stress management, including the stressors of the pandemic. My role is designed to be relatively short-term, which means that I also refer students to mental health and other community resources at times, as well as to our Student Support Advocate. I also manage 504 Plans, work on student schedules, teach occasional lessons, and I work with families as needed to support students.
My approach with students is positive, kind, and realistic, with an orientation towards growth, problem solving, and creative thinking. I am a big fan of self-care, healthy coping strategies, and easy-to-use tools to help make students’ academic and social-emotional lives more positive and successful.
Here are a few images to keep in mind as we start this school year, along with one of my favorite memories from this summer — I hope you had a fun and healthy summer. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
Picking up Chrome Books and Office Hours
You can pick up a chromebook anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Just call the office and they can help arrange a time.

Accessing Student Email
Google Classroom Access
Students will need to access Google Classroom to get assignments, take quizzes and tests, and see other information teachers post.
Here are directions to access Google Classroom.
Weekly Schedule for Students (This was included last week!)
Please see the schedule below for what the schedule will look like for a middle school student once we start school.
Students will attend periods 1, 3, & 5 on Mondays and Thursdays as well as periods 2, 4, & 6 on Tuesdays and Fridays (schedule with times shown below).
During these class times, teachers may be instructing students and/or be showing a pre-recorded video along with classroom discussions & activities.
On Wednesdays, students will have the opportunity to check in with their teachers during student hours set up by individual teachers.
Once we've finalized schedules, directions will be emailed in how to log into Skyward Family Access to view as well as invites to join all Google Classrooms will be sent out. More information to come soon in our weekly updates.
While things will definitely look different this fall, we will be connecting with each student in different ways beyond the six classes students have.
•We will have a daily check-in and morning announcements for each class.
•We will have Wednesday class meetings for large group advisory lessons and celebrations.
•We will offer clubs once the school year starts.
•We will (fingers crossed) offer sports starting in January.
Weekly Overview Template (This was included last week!)
An example of the template is pictured below.
What can we do to prepare for the first day of school? (This was included last week!)
It is important, when adding these apps, that students are using their school email address. These are their computer log - in with k12.scsd.ac as ending.
Example: smithjam000@k12.scsd.ac (email) & S!lunchnumber (password)
