Oak Hills Newsletter
Week of October 2, 2023
Message from the Principal
The Jog-A-Thon is on Friday! We are so excited for the annual schoolwide event. The PTO, volunteers, and staff have been promoting fitness, fun, and the amazing community efforts to fundraise for Oak Hills.
As of today, we have fundraised $22,000! Our goal is to raise $35,000 to fund field trips, enrichment opportunities, Family STEM Night, Global Fair, special assemblies, author visits, supplies and resources for students and staff. THANK YOU to all families and community members for making this event possible, and we are grateful for the donations!
How to prepare for the Jog-A-Thon
*Jog-A-Thon Schedule:
8:15-8:45am Kindergarten
9:00-9:30am 1st Grade and Primary ALC
9:45-10:15am 2nd Grade
10:30-11:00am 4th Grade and Upper ALC
11:00-1:00pm Lunch Break
1:00-1:30pm 3rd Grade
1:45-2:15pm 5th Grade
* Friday is Otter Pride day! All students will be receiving a new Jog-A-Thon shirt the morning of the event. Students can wear apparel and accessorize with red, white, and blue.
*We have reached our first schoolwide goal of raising $18,000! Students are excited to see Ms. Howery (counselor) and Ms. McCarty (student success coach) wear silly costumes and wigs for an entire day sometime in November!
*If our school meets our fundraising goal of $35,000, students voted for both administrators (Ms. Do and Ms. Hansen), to be smothered with ketchup and mustard. A messy and entertaining reward!
*The weather is looking to be warm--yay! Please have your child wear sunscreen if they are running in the afternoon. We encourage students to bring a water bottle. There will also be a water station set up.
There is more information below in the PTO News. If you are able, the PTO could really use some more volunteers to make this event go even more smoothly. Thanks for your consideration! See you on the field!
Sincerely,
Ms. Do

International Walk + Roll to School Day is coming up on October 4th! Parents, this is a great chance to get your child excited about active transportation. Getting exercise in the fresh air is the best way to get mentally and physically prepared for a day in the classroom. Mark your calendar and plan your route!
School Arrival Reminders
Our school day begins at 8:00am each day. We welcome students to arrive as early as 7:45 for Morning Mix or for breakfast. Students arriving to school between 7:45am- 8:00am need to be supervised by staff in each of our Morning Mix locations until the bell rings for class.
In recent weeks, we have seen students arriving to school early to play football or to play on the playground. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff to support additional supervised locations beyond those currently offered through Morning Mix.
We are excited to see students each morning and want to make sure they are safe in their transition to school each day. Thank you using our Morning Mix system as the safest option for students arriving to school early.
Library News from Ms. Larsen
Returning Library Books
The expectation is for students to return their library books to their class red library cart as soon as they are finished with them. Books are collected daily and checked in. Students may renew a book one or two more times if needed to finish the book. Please help your child get into a good routine to return their library books on time so they can check out new ones!
OBOB Teams
4th and 5th graders will be getting information about forming their OBOB team. They are able to have team members from other classes on the team. More info to come.
3rd Grade Teachers will be helping to form teams in their classrooms.
Check out the OBOB website for more information: https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/
Library Fines: If you received an email about a library fine, please follow the steps on email or the library website (below). Students are limited to one library book until the book is returned or the fine is paid. If you have questions or circumstances to share, please email Ms. Larsen.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Opportunities
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Academic, intellectual, behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
Starting October 5th, all 3rd grade students, new 4th graders, and nominated 5th grade students in Beaverton will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies, and figure matrices.
5th grade families can nominate their student for the CogAT Screener by completing the form by October 4.
Currently the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for Talented & Gifted (TAG) in the area of intellectual ability. Students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be invited to test with the full version of the CogAT that is used for potential TAG identification. The full version of the CogAT will be given in November.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion. Please turn in TAG nomination forms to the office or your child’s teacher by October 26th.
TAG Nomination Forms
For more information about testing, please contact your school’s TAG facilitators: Margaret Nice (margaret_nice@beaverton.k12.or.us) & Kirsten Yamada (kirsten_yamada@beaverton.k12.or.us). Additional TAG information can be also found at BSD TAG.
Helpful Website Buttons--Report Absences and Going Home Plan Changes
Absences and dismissal changes can be reported to us via the Oak Hills website. There are buttons where you can click and report an absence or changes to how your child will be going home.
For dismissal, please do your best to report the changes before 1:00pm since this is when we will be delivering the information to our teachers and students. If it is after 1pm, please call the main office to report the change and not the website button.
Thank you in advance for utilizing this communication tool. It will free up our phone lines for families, staff, and community members who urgently need to get in touch with the office.
