Parkview Elementary
December 2018 Newsletter
Dear Parkview Families,
Welcome to December! I hope that this newsletter finds you and your family enjoying the activities and community events that the holiday season has to offer. The students and staff have been working hard to make academic gains during these first three months of school.
At Parkview Elementary School our mission is committed to excellence and to prepare all students for postsecondary success, but what does that mean? Post-secondary success is success beyond high school. The definition of success is personal to each one of us. For some it could mean joining the military, for others attending college, for others being prepared to enter the workforce, and for others living independently. The staff at Parkview are on a mission to help each child develop the skills he/she needs to be successful after graduation!
There are several ways that staff at Parkview work to prepare students for postsecondary success, focusing on academic, behavior, and social skills along the way. For example:
We closely monitor the reading and math levels of all of our students, watching both where a student’s current skills are as well as how much he/she has grown over time. Teachers focus on keeping all students on track to read and do math at or above grade level, and provide additional instruction to those who need a boost.
We teach behaviors that students will use at school and in the community such as how to wait in line, how to greet someone respectfully, patiently being part of a large group, and resolving conflict peacefully.
As parents you play a huge role in the mission, too! There are a couple characteristics of young learners that increase the likelihood of post-secondary success:
Regular Attendance: Reinforce the importance of attending school regularly. Regular attendance helps children to feel a part of the school community, to be engaged in learning, and to build the foundation for future success in school.
Reading Achievement: Read regularly with your child. Whether you are reading to your child or your child reads to you, your child will reap the benefits of time spent in a book. Did you know there is a strong relationship between how well a child reads in third grade and high school graduation rates?
As we continue into the school year, post-secondary success is on our mind. Thank you for allowing us to serve your family. We look forward to partnering with you to help your child succeed.
The holiday season is a wonderful time to reflect upon the year and all the good that we have encountered throughout the calendar year. I am thankful for our students, staff and families that call Parkview their neighborhood school. Thank you for your continued support given to our school throughout the year. Your support helps to make us who we are!
Yours in Parkview PRIDE,
Melissa Olson
Principal

PBIS News
Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! We will start December off with an awesome all-school celebration. All classrooms will work hard to “hop back on the bus” with a focus on hallway expectations. Special awards will be handed out, a fun game will be played and of course, we will sing the Parkview Pride Song and the Energy Bus Song.
You may have noticed the stoplight on the bulletin board in Central Park. Stoplight colors will be used to help students understand what level of voice they need to have in certain areas around the school. A red voice would be off, no sound. This is how we walk down the hallway when others are learning. A yellow voice would be a whisper, only the person next to you can hear it, not the whole room. This would be great for talking in the bus lines or at lunch. A green voice would be a loud, outside voice. This is not a voice we use inside the school.
As we continue into the month of December, please remind your child to show behaviors that are safe, respectful, responsible and kind. December usually comes with lots of excitement and it’s important to remember that we still need to be responsible for our learning. That means completing our work on time, remembering to pack our winter weather gear (hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots) and not distracting others during our learning time in class. Let’s make December a joyful month to be a Parkview lion!
Happy Holidays to you and your family from the Parkview PBIS team!
