Grace Abbott Elementary
NEWS FROM DR. CHAUSSEE
Tired Kids (and Adults)
This week I worked with a child who, as we like to say in education, was making bad choices. Or, in more practical language, being naughty. He was having a temper tantrum and knew I’d seen this behavior before with my own children. Due to his out-of-character unreasonableness, I asked him if he slept well the night before. He said he stayed up late on his device. According to WebMD, elementary school-aged children should get 10-11 hours of sleep each night but probably only getting nine hours of sleep.
Occasionally I make book recommendations and here’s another one: Sharing the Covers: Every Couples Guide to Better Sleep. The very credible author states that many adults and children don’t get enough sleep, which probably everyone knows, and can lead to short and long term consequences. One short term consequence is increased anger. Despite the name of the book, it offers practical tips for parents and their children’s sleep habits. Perhaps if we had more sleep there would be fewer angry people and tantrum-throwing kids.
Abbott has gone more than two weeks with no Covid cases and only one so far this year. As stated last week, we want to do all we can to avoid closing a classroom. Parents, please monitor your child for symptoms as with any disease. If your child tests positive please call the school and Douglas County Health Department at 402- 444-7214. A positive student can not test to reduce their 10 day isolation period.

Even if you aren't planning on buying one, it helps us tremendously if you update your info. As a thank you, this year we are doing a raffle for those who have updated their info. The link for the raffle is found on the Buzz Book Website: https://graceabbottpto.membershiptoolkit.com/home
Purchase, update and enter to win on the website or you can always send a check to the school office. The cost is $4.00. Thank you!
Below is a zoom link invitation to our first PTO meeting on Zoom on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30. We did all of our PTO meetings last year using Zoom and of course, it can become somewhat unwieldy with so many people possibly attending and several updates that occur that can be hard to keep up with. In other words, we hope it works for everyone;
Parents do not need to accept an invitation due to the number nor be admitted if all works correctly as it is set up to not have to admit each person.
