About the Summit
In a time of increased cultural diversity, global connectivity, and polarization of perspectives, how can leaders in classrooms, schools, districts, and education policy arenas support students with the competencies to thrive in college, careers, and as citizens in diverse communities?
The day-long Global Leadership Summit, co-hosted by ASCD and the Global Education Conference Network, will convene classroom teachers, school and district administrators, and thought leaders in an interactive and engaging program.
The Global Leadership Summit will provide participants the unique opportunity to:
- Develop the capacity to lead classrooms and educational systems that teach students empathy, valuing diverse perspectives, cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills, and critical thinking and problem-solving around real-world issues.
- Network with innovative and inspiring teachers, principals, district leaders, thought leaders, and NGOs committed to educating students for a diverse, global society.
- Receive resources and generate new ideas that can help you make immediate changes in your educational context.
- Share best programs and practices in advocating for and implementing global learning initiatives with educators around the country and the world.
- Find out how you can get involved with and utilize ASCD’s resources on Global Competencies for Educational Leaders.

Dave Faulkner
Dave is the CEO and co-founder of Education Changemakers, a grassroots educator with a proven track record, and in recent years has emerged as a global leader in education innovation. An in-demand chair and keynote speaker for some of the world’s largest education events, Dave has shared the stage with education innovators including Ken Robinson, Angela Lee Duckworth, Anthony Salcito and Sugata Mitra and has a powerful grasp and influence on the changes taking place in schools across the globe. Dave’s education leadership journey began as a principal of an Australian school when he was only 24, for which he was awarded Young Australian of the Year (WA) and Young Leader of the Year (WA). Following this he undertook a succession of strong periods of school and regional improvement as a Principal and Regional Director, matching grassroots understanding with system-level insights and a relentless focus on helping to ensure that all students could access a great education. Dave is a global leader in accelerating education startups, works with thousands of educators each year and advises senior government, education leaders and company executives across the globe. Dave is one of our most in-demand speakers at EC and spends more than two hundred days a year engaging with education audiences.

Heidi Hayes Jacobs
Heidi Hayes Jacobs is founder and president of Curriculum Designers providing professional services to schools, organizations and agencies to create modern learning environments, upgrade curriculum and support teaching strategies to meet the needs of contemporary learners.
Her models on curriculum mapping and curriculum design have been featured in numerous books and software solutions throughout the world. She has taught courses at Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York City since 1981.
Working with a wide range of organizations, Jacobs has consulted to the College Board, NBC Sunday Today Show, the Peace Corps, the Discovery Channel, Children’s Television Workshop, The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, New York City Ballet Education, the International Baccalaureate, and state education departments.
In 2014, Jacobs was presented the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education by the Mediterranean Association for International Schools.
The fundamental backbone of Jacobs' experience comes from years as a teacher of high school, junior high school, and elementary children in Utah, Massachusetts, and New York.

Veronica Boix Mansilla
Veronica Boix Mansilla is a Principal Investigator and Steering Committee member at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she leads the IdGlobal Project and chairs the Future of Learning Institute. With a background in cognitive science, human development and education, she examines how to prepare our youth for a world of increasing complexity and interdependence. Her research focuses on three main areas. She studies (a) global competence as it develops among learners and teachers in various world regions; (b) quality interdisciplinary research and education among experts, teachers and youth; and (c ) quality teaching and learning in disciplines (history, biology, the arts) as lenses through which to understand the world.
Veronica’s work has produced frameworks and practical tools to support educators in interested in quality teaching, learning, curriculum, research, assessment, professional development, and program evaluation. Her writing on interdisciplinary work and evaluation—has informed National Academies of Science, National Science Foundation, International Baccalaureate’s interdisciplinary initiatives. Her work with the Asia Society on Global Competence education set the foundation for the US Department of Education’s International Education strategy.
Veronica serves as an advisor at a variety of institutions including the Asia Society, Association of American Colleges and Universities, Council of Chief State School Officers, the Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center, the International Baccalaureate, WorldSavy and Global Kids, among others. She teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has taught the University of Buenos Aires. She is the author of multiple papers and books including “Educating for Global Competence: Preparing our youth to engage the world” (2011) with Tony Jackson.

Fernando Reimers
Fernando M. Reimers is the Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice of International Education and Director of the Global Education Innovation Initiative and of the International Education Policy Masters Program at Harvard University.
Professor Reimers is an expert in the field of Global Education. His research and teaching focus on understanding how to educate children and youth so they can thrive in the 21st century. He studies how education policy and leadership foster educational innovation and quality improvement. As part of the work of the Global Education Innovation Initiative he leads, he and his colleagues conducted a comparative study of the goals of education as reflected in the curriculum in Chile, China, India, Mexico, Singapore and the United States, published as Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century by Harvard Education Press, a book which has also been published in Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish. A forthcoming book, also to be published by Harvard Education Press, studies programs around the world which support teachers in developing the professional competencies to teach holistically for the 21st Century.
Two recent books present innovative global citizenship curricula. Empowering Global Citizens a complete K-12 curriculum of global citizenship education, examines why global citizenship education, aligned with helping students advance human rights and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals is an imperative of our times. Empowering Students to Improve the World in Sixty Lessons. Version 1.0, presents a strategic framework and protocols to help teachers and school leaders develop strategies and curriculum for global citizenship education.

Heather Singmaster is Associate Director of the Center for Global Education at the Asia Society where her work focuses on international benchmarking and integrating global competence into Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as well as state and national policy. She leads the project, Mapping the Nation: The Case for Global Competence and is host of Education Week’s Global Learning blog. In partnership with ACTE and Advance CTE, she created Global Competence Through CTE – a set of online professional development modules and resources to support the CTE field. Currently she is working on an additional set of modules to support the teaching of globally focused STEM content through CTE. Heather previously worked at the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative. She holds a master’s degree in Anthropology from New York University and a Bachelors degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Publications include multiple blog posts on Education Week’s Global Learning, “Lifting Standards for All” in The South China Morning Post, Ready for the World: Preparing Elementary Students for the Global Age, Putting the World into World-Class Education: State Innovations and Opportunities, Going Global: Preparing Our Students for an Interconnected World, and “International Education and the Early Language Classroom” in Learning Languages.

Starting in 2010 with the launch of the virtual Global Education Conference, Steve and Lucy have hosted innovative face-to-face and in-person events for global educators and organizations. For the past six years, they have organized Global Education Day at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference (ISTE). In 2015, Global Collaboration Day was added to their repertoire and followed by Global Leadership Week in 2016. Additionally, they produce the Global Student Conference and the Global Education Fair.
