Shark Scoop
October 2022
Principal, Mr. Marker
Dear Naples Park Families,
It was wonderful to see our Sharks back in school today as we move forward together. My prayers continue for this community as we recover from the storm. The outreach and kindness pouring out is amazing from this incredible school family. I want to let you know an amazing volunteer effort to collect, organize, and offer items via a school “Shark Thrift Shop” room is now in place. Beginning Friday, October 7 from 3:30pm to 6:00pm, community families may pick up what they need. More details on this are outlined below in this newsletter in Mrs. Summers' section.
Moving forward, this month promises to be a great one for both learning and fun. Regarding the learning, do you ask your Shark each day after school “What did you learn today?” As your principal, it is a question I would love for you to ask our NPE Sharks. Teachers share with them daily their learning goals, and how they can get good grades on that goal for each content area. Students knowing what they are trying to learn, as well as how they will be assessed, is a researched high yield strategy to learn rigorously and successfully. The State of Florida sets up standards for each great level and each content areas. We as a district, school, and as a classroom teacher then get our Sharks to those goals annually. If you want more information about the Florida Standards, you can check it out here: https://www.cpalms.org/Public/search/Standard. I am in awe of the teaching and learning I am seeing here thus far. Again, you can help with that by asking our students what they learned each and every day.
Regarding the fun, October will be packed full of it. As you know, Naples Park Elementary is celebrating its 50th year Birthday and we are enjoying our theme of “A” Magical Time Machine. Both of those celebrations should be well represented at our First Annual Standards Costume Parade coming up on 10/31/22. Classroom teachers will be working on assigning costume or hat fun to each student associated with the standards they are learning. This is a day your little Shark will definitely be able to say what they learned as they will be wearing it! 😊 This morning event will be open to families to come in and watch the parade, so save the date (more detailed information will be sent home later in the month).
It is good to be at Naples Park Elementary School and together, we are Shark Strong.
Sincerely,
Christopher Marker

Literacy Coach, Mrs. Szarek
Simple Strategies for Creating Strong Readers from the Florida Department of Education. Just Read, Florida!
Without doubt, reading with children spells success for early literacy. Putting a few simple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping children develop into good readers and writers.
Through reading aloud, providing print materials and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and learning.
- Invite a child to read with you every day.
- When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. This will help the child learn that reading goes from left to right and understand that the word he or she says is the word he or she sees.
- Read a child's favorite book over and over again.
- Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite the child to join in on these parts. Point, word by word, as he or she reads along with you.
- Discuss new words. For example, "This big house is called a palace. Who do you think lives in a palace?"
- Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story.
- Read from a variety of children's books, including fairy tales, songbooks, poems and information books.
Reading well is at the heart of all learning. A child who can't read well, can't learn. Help make a difference for a child.
Fifth Grade News
It is hard to believe we will be wrapping up Quarter 1 this month! The 5th Graders have been working so hard this quarter. In science, we have been investigating mixtures and how different materials will dissolve in water and those that will not. We explored with different conditions that sped up or slowed down the dissolving process. In math, we learned about place value and decomposing decimals. Now we are working on adding and subtracting decimals with different strategies. In reading we have been exploring different genres of stories and analyzing figurative language. We are looking forward to our Mosquito Control presentation this month!
