IP addressing
An IP address is a 32 bit number assigned to any device that is connected to the internet by the router so it can identify it. An example is a router giving an IP address to a computer.
MAC addressing
Mac addressing is another piece of code connected to an ip address. this way you can uniqualy identify an ip address on a lan.
Protocols
A communications protocol is a system of digital message formats and rules for exchanging those messages in or between computing systems and in telecommunications. A protocol may have a formal description. Protocols may include signalling, authentication and error detection and correction capabilities.
Packets
When two devices want to communicate accross a LAN the message will be broken up into packets and sent.
