Mountain Vista Governor’s School (MVGS) is a regional program for academically talented and highly motivated 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Science, mathematics, humanities, and research courses are uniquely integrated to provide a college-level, project-based learning environment.

Prospective students and parents/guardians are invited to attend an MVGS Information Meeting. Faculty and staff will be present to discuss the MVGS program and answer questions.

Summer Residential Governor's Schools

The Summer Residential Governor's Schools are month-long residential programs for current year tenth- and eleventh-grade gifted students in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Governor’s Schools are designed for highly motivated students who are looking for a challenging summer experience. The selection process is extremely competitive. Most students selected rank in the top 10% of their class and have scored in the 90th percentile on standardized measures of ability or achievement tests. These residential programs run from late June to late July. Only students who are available during that time frame and whose records match these criteria should apply. Please see slide #6 in the slide deck for deadlines.

Advisory Time

Every week our students attend a one-hour Advisory class on Wednesdays. During this time, our students participate in lessons about SEL (social emotional learning) and our Handley Pride Expectations. To implement any program with fidelity, an emphasis must be placed on engagement. To this end, beginning the second semester our Advisory teachers will be "grading" our students with an O (=Outstanding), S (=Satisfactory), or N (=Not Satisfactory). These grades will appear on a student's report card, but are not factored into a student's GPA, nor will the grade appear on a student transcript. Attendance in Advisory and engagement with the material will be the basis that our teachers use to give these grades.

Help Boost Kids’ Safety, Privacy and Security

When kids go online, whether they're playing multiplayer games, using social media apps, or posting their latest creative expressions, it's important that they understand how to keep their private information safe. With tips on how to avoid scams and protect their personal data, tweens and teens can travel all over the digital world -- and still be in charge of their digital footprints. Common Sense Media lessons related to Privacy & Security were covered last week during Advisory. Here is a follow up family activity (English/Spanish) that you may find beneficial.

PBIS Student Expectations

JHHS will begin a virtual rewards program for students during the month of October through the PBIS Rewards platform. This is very exciting news!! Students now earn reward points for demonstrating desired behaviors according to our Handley PRIDE expectations!!

When an administrator, teacher, or staff person acknowledges a student demonstrating these behaviors, they can now award them points through the PBISRewards website. All students have an account that they can access at PBISrewards.com or through CLEVER. At this time, the points that students earn will allow them to qualify for incentives. We hope to expand this effort by finding ways wherein students can “spend” their points, more to come on that! Please support this effort by encouraging your students to meet our school wide expectations each and every day!

PTSO Updates!

Handley Athletics Department News

Douglas Bulldogs Night

The John Handley High School Athletic Department is pleased to announce "Douglas Bulldogs Night" to be celebrated on January 6th during the home basketball game vs James Wood High School. The Girls Varsity game will be at 6:00 pm followed by the Boys Varsity game at 7:30 pm.

The Douglas School was the heart and center of the African American community of Winchester and Frederick County when it served Black students from 1927-1966 during the days of segregation. Douglas was also vital to the Strasburg and Woodstock communities as their students rode the school bus into Winchester each day for high school. The two communities were very supportive of the students and activities at Douglas.

Both the Girls and Boys Handley Basketball teams will be wearing replica uniforms of the Douglas Bulldog squads. During halftime of the Boys game, all Douglas alumni will be recognized in an on court ceremony. Additionally, a historical account of the Douglas School will be displayed in the lobby that evening.

Please join us for this recognition and celebration of "Douglas Bulldogs Night". Cash tickets are available at the door for $6 or online tickets may be purchased through Go Fan at the link below.
