Open House at FMS
Back to School 2018
Open Houses/Hornet Camp
- Rooms need to be ready by your open house time.
- You do not need to pass anything required out during open house. (we will take care of that in the gym)
- Goal=build relationships and excitement for the school year (examples below)
- We will keep you fed and hydrated during open house.
Let's DO This!
Dress Expectations
Mental Model for those that want examples:
BHouf will be sporting her new FMS shirt, with black capris and some rocking converse sneaks.
EHogan will be sporting her new FMS shirt, with black non-shorty shorts and fresh Nike's.
What Do We Do During Open House?
- Show your passion and enthusiasm for your content.
- Show off your organization by your room being ready to go (just like you do at home when company is coming)
How can you do this?
- Have a slideshow going that is all about you or all about what they will learn this year
- Set up stations with getting to know you activities
- Be sure you do not sit at your desk...you will need to be off your feet a little, but position yourself in a way that is welcoming and inviting.
- Set up a photobooth for selfies and post them to the Twitter
- Set up a Hopes and Wishes for 2018-19
- Set up an area to share what they love about your content and what they struggle with your content
- Find out the passions of your students and families

What parents REALLY want from an Open House by Angela Watson
In my experience, what family members expect is relatively simple:
1) A clean and organized classroom that their child takes ownership of
2) A warm and friendly teacher who welcomes them
3) An informal, easy-to-understand presentation that provides a good sense of what the year will be like
Parents have no idea what to expect from a teacher their children have never had before. Most of them are not worried about how often you’ll be giving science tests or what materials you’ll use to teach addition. They want to know:
* Does the teacher like my child?
* Does the teacher care about the kids and enjoy teaching?
* Does the teacher want to support me and my child?
* Is the teacher going to be fair and easy to work with?
These things are communicated through the energy you put out and the environment you create in the classroom. Some of it can be communicated verbally, but most of is conveyed in your demeanor. Smile! Smile! Smile! Act relaxed even though you’re not. Listen attentively to parents and treat their questions and concerns seriously. They are not your superiors there to observe you, so don’t be intimidated. They are your equals, so treat them with kindness and respect and don’t worry about what they’re thinking. Most of them are extremely grateful to have you in their children’s lives, and want to support you in having a successful Open House and school year.
