April 24, 2020 Lions Lines Updates
MESSAGE FROM MRS. PAPAIOANNOU
Parents,
Jon Gordon has such a way with words. I hope this speaks to you as it did to me.
Enjoy the weekend and the weather!
IT'S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY
It's okay to not be okay.
You never want to ignore or deny how you feel.
Being positive doesn't mean you suck it up and put a fake smile on your face.
It's okay to go through a wide range of emotions and feel the stages of grief.
You might have felt denial, anger, sadness, acceptance and meaning over the last 4 to 5 weeks. Actually, you might even feel these stages and emotions in the course of a day.
There's no rule book on how to feel during a global pandemic where the rules and social norms of our lives have changed.
You were used to seeing your colleagues at the office, hugging your friends, going to church, taking your kids to school, eating at restaurants, going to sporting events, rooting for your favorite pro baseball or basketball team, gathering with friends, petting your neighbors’ dogs... and now you can't.
You're not used to seeing a daily ticker on the television screen counting the deaths of people around the world and in your country and seeing daily images of people in hospitals... and now you are.
So, if you aren't okay, it's okay.
It's okay to be concerned about the loss of life, the condition of our economy and the expansion of authoritarian government policies. Some act like you have to pick one but it's okay to be concerned about all three simultaneously.
It's okay to be scared, frustrated and feel down.
You just don't want to stay there too long and allow these feelings to take you down a spiral staircase of depression and despair.
The key is to find the optimism, hope and faith to keep going and create a better future.
This is not about seeing the world through rose colored glasses. This is knowing you have the power to overcome the thorns.
You have the power to shift your perspective and turn your pain into purpose and struggle into strength.
One day I honestly was letting everything get the best of me. I realized my worry, fear, sadness and anger weren't going to help me be my best or bring out the best in others.
So, I decided I wasn't going to buy the doom and gloom being sold and told on the news and social media. Instead I was going to invest in faith, love and hope. Everything changed after that.
The biggest compliment I receive is that people will tell me I helped them keep going when they wanted to give up and I hope these words do this for you today.
Feel your feelings, give yourself permission to not be okay and then empower yourself with the tools you need to keep moving forward so you can be okay.
Keep believing, keep working, keep going!
Here's a free Stay Positive Action Plan. I hope it's helpful to you. -Jon

Music Updates from Ms. Parker
Hi everyone! I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. This week, I have three optional activities for you to do either alone or with your families.
MusicPlayOnline – This is an awesome website that we have used in class. It has been redone for students to use during at home learning. When you click the link, there are all sorts of games on the righthand side. Pick one or more to practice things we have been doing in class! There are games suitable for kinder (fast/slow, loud/quiet, beat/no beat) all the way through 5th grade (instrument bingo, rhythm racing, note name memory, etc). Also, if you click on the grade levels at the top, you will find lists of tons of different songs. There are even online learning lessons taught by real music teachers (big orange button in the center – Online Learning). Feel free to explore on the site and learn something new or just practice what we’ve already learned with a game! https://musicplayonline.com/
Percussion Playalong – I have a new playalong for you this week. It uses the same materials as last week (box, metal can, cutlery, and lid), but this one is much harder. You will need at least 2 people to play all of it, but if you are doing it alone, feel free to leave out some parts if needed. If you have more than 4 people, have multiple people use the materials (like how we have many people playing the same colored boomwhackers in class) I hope this is a fun activity for your entire family to do together. Percussion Playalong
House on Music Street – Finally, here is your weekly music lesson episode. Good luck with the body percussion (pats, claps, snaps) pattern that goes with Frog Went A-Courtin’. It is hard, but a good challenge for older students. If it is too hard, try just patting the beat or coming up with your own patterns.

I miss everyone so much!

Art with Ms. K.
Hello artists! I hope you are all staying healthy and busy! What incredible weather we’ve had this week! I hope you’ve all spent a little time outside soaking in some sunshine.
This coming week, the art challenges come from our school district! Some may look similar to past challenges of mine, but they all look like fun! I’m going to see what I can do with these myself!
Art teachers from all over CFISD have worked together to come up with these wonderful Artist’s Choice Boards! Think of them like a Menu at a Restaurant. You can pick whatever inspires you, and you can certainly choose more than one!
*Note to parents: Just like my art challenges, the district would like to emphasize that these activities are suggestions and completely optional! They are simply ideas to help break up that quarantine boredom, bring some enrichment and creativity to your day, and get those creative juices flowing! Any grade level (and any family members!) are free to get involved! If you participate in any of our art challenges, please share so we can see! Options are: -Post a picture on Instagram and tag our studio account @hesartstudio to be featured! -Email pictures to me to then be used (with your permission and credit to the artist) at kirsten.gould@cfisd.net
I hope these ideas help in some small way, and if you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to share something you’ve made, PLEASE don’t hesitate to reach out! I look forward to seeing what you create this week! Have a great week, Lions! Stay healthy and keep creating!
