Character Focus for November & December: Compassion
At DCMS we are focusing our character lessons on the trait of compassion. We define compassion as “helping those who are hurting.”
Compassion begins with sympathy, which is seeing someone’s pain. It is noticing a student who skins his knee or a friend who hurts her arm. It is being alert to a weary co-worker or a stranger who needs assistance.
Compassion also includes empathy, which is feeling someone’s pain. Once you notice an injury, empathy means you imagine how much it hurts. This creates a feeling of duty, responsibility, and sometimes urgency to help find a remedy.
This brings us to the full meaning of compassion, which is doing something to relieve someone’s pain. It is not enough to see needs and feel badly for those who are hurting. Compassion means getting involved, investing in others, and finding ways to “bear someone’s burden” in order for healing to occur.
I WILL:
- Notice when others are hurting.
- Stop to help.
- Take time to listen.
- Do what I can.
- Be kind, regardless of differences.
Please take the time to discuss your beliefs about compassion with your student today.
DISCUSSION STARTERS:
- When have you been sick or injured?
- How did others help you?
- What does it mean to be a "good neighbor" when you see someone in need?
- How can you show compassion to someone who is being picked on, teased, bullied, or harassed by other students?
- Sometimes compassion means showing "tough love." What do you think this means? Can you think of an example?

Dewey’s X-mas Treat and Toy Drive
Does your child have overdue fines in the media center? Would you like to see those fines disappear? The media center will be giving students an opportunity to do this with “Dewey's X-mas Treat and Toy Drive". Students who donate items for this drive will have their overdue book fines deleted in the media center. Those students who do not have overdue fines can still donate items to help out with this drive. All of our donations will be given to Hendricks County Animal Control/Shelter. Please help us give something special to the animals for Christmas by encouraging your child to donate.
The following items are needed: cat litter, dog & puppy food, cat food, cleaning materials, and towels.
Also if students would like to donate a special Christmas gift for one of the animals at the shelter they may bring in one of the following: dog & cat treats, dog & cat toys, collars and/or leashes. All items must be new.
Donation boxes will be in the media center. We will be taking money donations as well to purchase these products for the animals. Please contact Miss Seegers if you have questions about this program or how you can help at eseegers@danville.k12.in.us.
