What Is Phenylketonuria (PKU)

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is inherited from one of the parents, who don't necessarily have this birth defect, but just carry the gene, then pass it on to their babies. It is where a baby is born without the ability to break down an amino acid called phenylalanine.
