WEEKLY UPDATE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT, DR. SHIBLER
Dear RPS Stakeholders:
With the majority of students back in school in person and about 900 enrolled in Rockford Virtual School, we hope to settle into a pattern of consistency. While we believe in-person instruction is the most effective academically and best for the social-emotional wellbeing of students, we also understand that the virtual option is important for some families. That being said, we have begun the 2021-22 Rockford Virtual School planning to maintain that as an option for families.
In terms of our ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy environment in our schools, we ask that you please not come to school or send your child to school:
- if you are or someone in your household is awaiting the results of a COVID test,
- if someone in your household has been diagnosed with COVID,
- for the following 10 days after someone in your household has had COVID,
- for the following 10 days if you have been quarantined due to a close contact,
- if you have one major or two minor symptoms that are attributed to COVID, or
- if you suspect someone in your household may have COVID until it has been verified that they do not have COVID.
It takes all of us working together for our students, staff, and community, and I appreciate your continued efforts and cooperation. Please see this flyer for additional information. If you have any questions about COVID protocols, please contact your child's school principal or the district nurse.
We are excited to have winter sports underway, with the understanding there are some restrictions that must be followed. If you have any questions about protocols for winter sports, please visit the Athletic website for information specific to each sport. If you still have questions, feel free to contact the Athletic Department at 616-863-6040.
Thank you,
Dr. Michael Shibler

Secondary Full Face To Face Attendance Reporting
The combination of one-to-one technology, our learning management system (Schoology), and fantastic efforts by our teachers in growing our virtual instruction practices has made education possible during these challenging times. Our remote and hybrid instructional models offered flexibility for students and families and as we transition back to face-to-face, we want to be clear on how staff will be supporting students moving forward while in full, face to face instruction. In-person student attendance is expected in our full face to face instructional model.
COVID Related Absence
Students that are unable to attend school due to COVID will be supported through live-streamed instruction via Google Meet, just as was done during hybrid instruction. COVID related absences include:
· Student is exhibiting symptoms and awaiting test results
· Student has tested positive and has to quarantine for a scheduled period of time
· Student was a close contact and has to quarantine
Absence not Related to COVID
Students that are unable to attend school for traditional short-term absences will utilize Schoology to participate in makeup work. A live streaming option will not be provided for students who are missing for non-COVID short term absences.
