Patriot's Pen | Scholarship Opportunity
Each year, nearly 68,800 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Before submitting your essay, read the rules and eligibility requirements, and find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31. Download and complete the 2022-2023 entry form here.
The 2022-23 theme is:
"My Pledge to Our Veterans."
Are you interested in being apart of the Central Middle School Robotics Club?
What is a robotics club?
Upon interest and a selection process, teams will be formed and will be expected to meet after school on a particular day(s) each week, and sometimes on the weekends to practice. Members will also be expected to attend robotics events.
Once teams are formed, they must start immediately designing and building a robot that can compete against opponents in a series of specific challenges.
Students develop and program their robot in the weeks before the event, adhering to list of preset rules and regulations.

Hello! Each week, the SEL newsletter focuses on a different SEL competency and includes valuable resources and activities that you can use to promote well-being at home or in the classroom. This week's topic is Self-Awareness and identifying emotions. I am happy to be here to support the students, staff, and families of CMS!

Central Middle School
We have MAP testing this week which will help teachers with content areas of concern with students. We will use this data to determine lessons, interventions, and methods to ensure students' gaps are covered.
Please get a good night's sleep and bring Chromebooks fully charged.
September is Suicide Prevention Month
Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness on this stigmatized and often taboo topic. In addition to shifting public perception, we use this month to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. The goal is to ensure that individuals, friends, and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.
Warning Signs
Aggressive behavior
Withdrawal from friends, family, and community
Dramatic mood swings
Impulsive or reckless behavior
If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
**Please note: There will be no more schedule changes unless the student has 2 of the same classes, missing a class, or approved by Mrs. Mendoza.
Helping Gifted Kids Manage "All the Feels"
Processing and managing emotions is hard for even the most level-headed of us. For gifted and twice-exceptional kids and teens, dealing with "all the feels" can be exhausting. The skills needed to develop emotional regulation can be developed over time with guidance and compassion from parents. In an upcoming Parent Webinar, Emily Kircher-Morris will break down the 4-step process of emotional regulation so we can help our kids who are "a little bit extra" find healthy ways to manage their emotions.
